As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach (forro, folk). Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian.
In 1975, he recorded his first album, Paêbirú along with Lula Côrtes through the label Rozenblit. Today the copies from this very rare vinyl are highly-priced in the international collector's market.

The lyrics of Zé Ramalho's song Tá Tudo Mudando speak about a person who is walking in a state of worry, with no one in front of them and no one by their side except for a woman in their lap drinking champagne. The singer describes themselves as well-dressed and waiting for the last train while looking at the sky with an old gaze of a child. They feel like they are standing on a scaffold with a noose around their neck, with only a second and a half to decide what they will do. They observe that the world is getting crazier and time is strange, feeling trapped and unable to reach beyond their current situation. They acknowledge that they care, but everything is changing.
The singer then reflects on their surroundings, recognizing that the place they are in is not good for their health and that they should be in Hollywood. They witness movement for a second and consider taking dance lessons or attending a Candomblé ceremony, trying to take life as it comes and go as far as it can take them. They realize that there is much water under the bridge and much else happening around them. The singer implores themselves not to be a fool and think there is nothing left to be said. They contemplate the end of the world and distance themselves from their own self, saying that they are not ready to commit the same mistake as Jose and Dona Lucia, who drowned themselves in a lake.
