I Am
Z. Randall Stroope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah
Fatigue has never been my goal
But playing for a team is good for the soul
So I took a few roles and threw a few coals
To keep the firing burning
Like a simple braai for the okes
I'm a servant at heart this joy is for everybody
But my body feeling drained
Like I soaked my body
Back at campus we would lie down to soak a body
Filled in His presence baptized without soaking bodies
But now I need a dip for this old body
I can hardly see I always bump a body
I want to soar high like the eagles
But I don't have the energy to spell where an e goes
Asked God for new clear vision but I explode
When I should go forward
But that's not how my tale goes
When I'm trying to be ahead
But my boundaries backfire on me instead
I'm looking for peace signs but flags are turning red
Thinking I can commit to something I eventually dread
Maybe I'm a yes man
I have to learn to say no
And still keep that as part of my best plan
Am I the only one
The only one
I'm feeling so tired and drained
I'm in pain
Am I the only one
The only one
I'm feeling so
Am I the only one
The only one
I'm feeling so tired and drained
I'm in pain
Am I the only one
The only one
I'm feeling so
Am I the only one
I guess not though
Hearing the homie zeal
And knowing just how he feel
I think I should just stop though
And throw the towel in the ring
And lift the middle finger to the scene huh
But I guess that's me thinking irrational
Weight on my shoulder but ain't nobody helping though
Plastic fake is all I see around me
Cause when the rubber meets the road ya'll ain't be around me
Felt Like I was drowning
Anxiety heart pounding
Everything fell away only in Christ I'm grounded
Had to put them boundaries all around me
Or I probably jump off a bridge
I hate the way that's sounding
It's easy to give into depression
When the church don't listen they just offer prescription
When they need to walk with you but they too busy judging
When they need to talk to you but they too busy studying
Too busy trying too be right not trying to give life
Too busy trying to recite not trying to be like
Am I the only one who feels this way
Am I the only one who feels this way
Am I the only one
The only one
I'm feeling so tired and drained
I'm in pain
Am I the only one
The only one
I'm feeling so
Am I the only one
The only one
I'm feeling so tired and drained
I'm in pain
Am I the only one

The only one
I'm feeling so

Overall Meaning

The song "I Am" by Z. Randall Stroope seems to be a reflection on the feelings of exhaustion, burnout, and isolation that can come with serving a community or being part of a team. The lyrics speak of the singer's struggles with fatigue and aches, both physical and emotional, as well as their attempts to keep the "firing burning" by taking on roles and responsibilities. The broader theme of the song seems to be a search for connection and support in the midst of stress and uncertainty. The singer questions whether they are the only one feeling this way, suggesting that they are looking for validation and empathy from others.

The lyrics contain a number of vivid metaphors and allusions to images of fire, water, and flight. The first verse describes the singer's attempts to keep the fire burning like a "simple braai for the okes," which seems to be a reference to a South African barbecue. Later, the singer also mentions soaking bodies in water and flying like eagles, both of which suggest a desire for renewal and escape from the pressures of daily life. The chorus repeats the phrase "Am I the only one?" multiple times, creating a sense of loneliness and disconnection that is echoed in the final verse's references to drowning.

Interestingly, the song also contains several critiques of organized religion and the church. In one verse, the singer laments that the church too often offers "prescription" instead of real support, and is too busy "studying" or "judging" instead of listening and walking with people. The song seems to suggest that true connection and healing can only come from authentic relationships and empathy, rather than just following doctrine and rules.

Overall, "I Am" is a poignant and introspective song about the struggles of community service and the search for validation and support. While the lyrics are specific to the singer's experiences, the broader themes of burnout, loneliness, and the need for connection will likely resonate with many listeners.

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love - put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be

Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love—put out

Swept by the tempest of your love,

My dad passed away in November, and I showed this song to him a few months before. He told me this is what he thinks heaven sounds like.

That is so beautiful🤍 I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom when I was 13 and I always see her when I listen to ‘Lanslide” by Fleetwood Mac

Ilisian

It makes me happy to know that so many young people have the opportunity to sing choral works like this.  Many school districts have lost their music programs.  Help!!

Absolutely the most beautiful rejection you will ever hear in your life. So heart-felt and thoughtful. It almost brought me to tears went I sang this song at a high school festival.

This will always be one of the most breathtaking songs I've ever had the opportunity to sing. It's not easy, the harmony is thorough and gorgeous, but the words steal your heart. When I become nostalgic, I listen to this song and remember one of my proudest moments in life: the entire chorus nailing a song, and the emotions it brought. That's why I love music so much. It's so powerful. Can I go back to choir???

Veronica Melgar

Start a choir????

I could not relate more to this
