Zaar rose from the ashes of Sotos which is another RIO/Avant band. Two Sotos members, guitarist Yan Hazera and drummer Michael Hazera, wished to continue composing music in the same vein as that of their previous band. To accomplish this they invited the two musicians, Pairbon and Cosia from the Familha Artus band and together they formed Zaar in June 2004.
Their musical influences can be traced in different sources. In their first album one can hear RIO, chamber rock, eastern ethnic sounds (portrayed by the violin), Zeuhl characteristics, some jazzy moments and improvisational elements. Their sound is very dynamic, experimental, rich and intricate and it contains some crazy and thrilling musicianship (especially with the hurdy gurdy) as can be expected from a band of this genre. This is a band filled with potential that will undoubtedly produce more excellent albums such as their 2006 "Zaar". While they do bear a resemblance to Sotos, Zaar have moved away in their sound from their previous incarnation. A must hear for all fans of aforementioned bands and all those who appreciate originality and experimentalism.
They released their self titled album in January 2006 via Cuneiform records.

Self processing
My system is down
I have to leave
Let them know
I'm saying goodbye
If they asked me why
So let them know
I'm saying goodbye
Let them know
I'm terrified
I've found a wild place
It's time to go hunting
A wild place
No one to share it with
I'm homesick
Im throwing up
I'm homesick
I'm growing up
Trying to get up
Trying to
I'm gonna get up
Trying to
In the song "Homesick" by Zaar, the lyrics convey a sense of inner turmoil and a desire to break free from one's current circumstances. The opening lines, "Self processing, My system is down, I have to leave," suggest a feeling of being overwhelmed and needing to escape from a situation that isn't serving the individual's well-being. It could be interpreted as the person struggling with their own thoughts and emotions and recognizing the need for a change.
The next set of lines, "Let them know, I'm saying goodbye, I would cry if they asked me why, So let them know, I'm saying goodbye, Let them know, I'm terrified," reveal a hesitancy to openly express their emotions. There seems to be a fear of being vulnerable and revealing the true reasons behind their departure. This could imply that the person is afraid of being misunderstood or judged for their decision to leave.
The following lines, "I've found a wild place, It's time to go hunting, A wild place, No one to share it with," suggest that the person has discovered a new, uncharted territory that excites and intrigues them. This could be a metaphor for a new chapter in their life or a metaphorical journey of self-discovery. However, it is also clear that there is a sense of loneliness associated with this newfound freedom, as there is no one to share this wild and exciting place with.
The chorus, "I'm homesick, I'm throwing up, I'm homesick, I'm growing up," encapsulates the conflicting emotions within the lyrics. The term "homesick" suggests a longing for familiarity and security, but the physical reaction of throwing up combines with the idea of growing up, indicating that leaving the comfort zone is simultaneously causing anxiety and facilitating personal growth. It can be interpreted as a reflection of the emotional struggle and mixed feelings associated with stepping out of one's comfort zone and venturing into the unknown.
The repetition of "Trying to get up, Trying to, I'm gonna get up, Trying to" in the final lines conveys a determination to overcome obstacles and move forward. This repetition signifies a resolute mindset and emphasizes the individual's commitment to pushing through the challenges they face. It represents the person's pursuit of self-improvement and their willingness to embrace change, no matter how difficult it may be.
Overall, "Homesick" explores themes of personal growth, the fear of vulnerability, the desire for adventure and self-discovery, and the struggles that come with stepping out of one's comfort zone. It portrays a journey of emotional conflict and the determination to overcome obstacles in order to achieve personal fulfillment.
