It Goes On
Zac Brown Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Barely hanging on like a midnight cigarette
When the nights don't seem to end
And that lonely wind is singing you to sleep once again
I won't make a promise I can't keep
Like a river flows to the ocean deep
Bound to forever
Even when we're gone
It goes on and on
We'll be together
At the rising of the dawn
It goes on
When your mind's on the loose
Slowly wearing out like a faded old tattoo
When the days all look the same
When that lonely wind keeps singing only you can ease the pain
That's the kind of bond that you can't break
Like looking up at all the stars in space
It goes on and on
Bound to forever
Even when we're gone
It goes on and on
We'll be together
At the rising of the dawn
It goes on
Digging through the sands of time to find my way back home
Your memory's the thing that keeps me hanging on
To know I'm not alone, we're stronger than the bonds of blood
Even on the darkest days together through the valley of the gun
It goes on and on
Bound to forever
Even when we're gone
It goes on and on and on
We'll be together
At the rising of the dawn
We'll be together
At the rising of the dawn
Zac Brown's song "It Goes On" is a testament to the power of enduring relationships. The title itself suggests that no matter what happens, life will keep going on, and so will the relationships we have. The lyrics are written in a way that acknowledges the difficulties that come with life, the challenges that lead our hearts and minds to the edge. These feelings of being lost, left behind, and stuck in a rut are all things that are relatable to us, and this is where the song really shines.
The first verse, "When your heart's on the edge, Barely hanging on like a midnight cigarette," sets the scene for a story of heartbreak and exhaustion - a person is "barely hanging on" to their emotions and is as burnt out as the ash of a cigarette. The lyrics go on to describe how the person is so tired and lonely that the wind is singing them to sleep. The chorus then comes in with a message of comfort, that even when you feel like you're at your most vulnerable, life will keep going on, and so will your relationship.
The second verse goes on to describe the more mental aspects of weariness, with the metaphor of a faded old tattoo. The chorus then repeats, this time accenting that nothing will be able to break the bond between two people. The bridge reaffirms this notion of a bond that is so strong it can withstand anything, whether it be the sands of time or the valley of the gun.

When you heart's on the edge
When you feel like you're about to fall apart
Barely hanging on like a midnight cigarette
Hanging on by a thread, just like a cigarette that's almost burned out
When the nights don't seem to end
When everything seems to be going wrong and you can't sleep
And that lonely wind is singing you to sleep once again
When everything is quiet except for the sound of the wind, and you can't help but feel alone
I won't make a promise I can't keep
I won't promise something that I know I can't deliver
Like a river flows to the ocean deep
Just as a river naturally flows towards the endless expanse of the ocean
It goes on and on
Life continues, without any end in sight
Bound to forever
Inevitably joined to the passing of time
Even when we're gone
Even after we've passed away
We'll be together
There will always be a connection between us
At the rising of the dawn
When the sun rises and a new day begins
When your mind's on the loose
When your thoughts are scattered and hard to control
Slowly wearing out like a faded old tattoo
Like a tattoo that slowly fades over time
When the days all look the same
When every day seems to be a repetition of the last
When that lonely wind keeps singing only you can ease the pain
When you feel all alone, with only the sound of the wind to keep you company, and only you can make yourself feel better
That's the kind of bond that you can't break
A connection that is unbreakable
Like looking up at all the stars in space
Just like looking up at the endless expanse of the universe
Digging through the sands of time to find my way back home
Searching through the past to find a sense of belonging
Your memory's the thing that keeps me hanging on
Memories are what keep us tethered to the past
To know I'm not alone, we're stronger than the bonds of blood
Even when it feels like we're alone, we have a connection that is stronger than family ties
Even on the darkest days together through the valley of the gun
Even when things are at their worst, we can get through it together
It goes on and on and on
Life continues, without any end in sight
We'll be together
There will always be a connection between us
At the rising of the dawn
When the sun rises and a new day begins

My Dad passed away 4 weeks ago. He was an Air Force fighter pilot and a Vietnam Vet, who served two tours in Vietnam, and taught many other pilots. I've been sorting through the memorabilia he left behind, and there are so many things that show very clearly just how tight the bond is between Brothers in Arms. This movie was a great illustration of that as well. To all the Vets out there, know that your sacrifice is appreciated, more than you will ever know. And to all of the spouses and families, without your sacrifice, our Vets could not do their jobs half as well. Thank you.
High Flight
By John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds -
and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of -
wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along
and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.
"Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand and touched the face of God.

This song doesn't only fit the 12 Horse Soldiers but anyone who's been deployed. It shows a bond between all fighting men.
@russkeith1652
I was never deployed, but have the UTMOST respect and appreciation for those who did!
@TheInfantry98
It doesn’t show how that bond breaks apart upon ETS
