Road Back Home
Zakk Wylde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look around I see that time ain't changed
Same old faces, Same old names
All the things we thought we knew
You lied to me & I lied to you
(Now) All this time
You never sympathize
All this time
I can't find my way back inside
What you give is what you get
But you drew the line on me baby
Tears falling free but you can't see (child)
I'm just a touch away baby

[Chorus]
Tell me where am I now (oh-o)
Why, where and how
Show me the road back home (oh-yeah)
Tell me where am I now (oh-o)
Why, where and how
Show me the road back home, back home

The pain blew in like a hurricane
Stranger in this town bearing your name
Trapped in the silence with my memories
It's cutting me deep and its tellin' me

All this time
You never sympathize
All this time
I can't find my way back inside

Going nowhere and I'm headed there fast
And I don't mean maybe
The light is getting low & my touch is growing cold
Oh just hold me baby

Tell me where am I now (oh-o)
Why, where and how
Show me the road back home (oh-yeah)
Tell me where am I now (oh-o)
Why, where and how
Show me the road back home, back home

What you give is what you get
But you drew the line on me baby
Tears falling free but you can't see (child)
I'm just a touch away baby

Tell me where am I now (oh-o)
Why, where and how
Show me the road back home (oh-yeah)
Tell me where am I now (oh-o)

Why, where and how
Show me the road back home, back home

Overall Meaning

Zakk Wylde’s song “Road Back Home” tells the story of someone who feels lost and disconnected from their past. The singer looks around and sees familiar faces and places, but everything feels different. The pain of a broken relationship is also evident in the lyrics as the singer talks about lies and a lack of sympathy. The chorus contains the repeated plea to be shown the road back home, which can be taken literally or interpreted as a search for emotional grounding.

It is clear that the singer is struggling with feelings of displacement and loneliness. Despite being surrounded by people and memories, they feel as though they don’t belong or can’t connect to the past. The hurricane metaphor emphasizes the intensity of this pain and the feeling of being trapped. However, the singer still longs for connection, asking to be held or touched even though they feel distant from others.

This song can speak to anyone who has felt lost or disconnected from their past. It is also a commentary on the ways in which we try to hide our pain from others, even when we desperately want someone to understand. The repeated refrain of “Tell me where am I now” suggests a longing for clarity and understanding in a world that may seem chaotic and unforgiving.

on Lost Prayer

It's pretty obvious to me that the video to this song is about the corruption of this young boy. He falls into an evil trap of sex addiction and is controlled by demonic thoughts, represented by the red-masked demon. This lifestyle is unsatisfying and in the end he is chewed up and thrown away, so to speak, by those he used and who used him. He also deprived himself of real love from the girl/young woman/angel because of his inner demons and continued bad choices.
