Slave Morality
Zarathustra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Born without instinct, without selfishness
No will to power, to become wise
The inferior way of the slave is the failed hope in a god who never existed

The world is created by dreams
Reality is a long vale, without summits
Hypocritical beings are contemtible
The heritage is pathetic

To go without croaches is impossible
The freedom of free speech is supressed
Morality controls all acts
Blind faith determines the life

I HATE YOUR SLAVE MORALITY

Try to carve forgiving gods
Driven by one purpose, fear of death
Ignorance destroyed 'em
Blind and unable to see the truth

A divine paradise already died
Their heaven is in flames

Gods are dethroned
If they know the truth

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Zarathustra's song Slave Morality delve into the concept of slave morality and its impact on society. The first stanza highlights the disadvantage of being born without instinct or selfishness, resulting in a lack of a will to power or the desire to become wise. This, according to Nietzschean philosophy, is the inferiority wrought by slave morality, which places unwarranted emphasis on meekness, humility, and submission to a nonexistent god.

The next stanza speaks to the contrast between dreams and reality, where reality is bereft of the peaks that dreams promise. Hypocritical beings, as alluded to in the song, are contemptible, and the human heritage is pathetic. Zarathustra rightfully points out that to go without croaches is impossible. Freedom of speech is often suppressed, and all acts are controlled by morality, while blind faith determines the quality of life. It is in this context that Zarathustra vehemently pronounces his hatred for slave morality in the chorus of the song.

The last stanza speaks to the failure in carving gods who offer forgiveness and are driven by the fear of death. Ignorance ruins them as they can't see the truth and are blind to their own downfall. The gods they have created are dethroned, and their divine paradise is in flames.

If some aliens set foot on earth and wanted to know what Black Metal (Second wave and beyond, of course) is, I'd play them that very EP. This was the very first (!) underground-BM-EP I've purchased as a 17-year-old, straight from the singers Label Kneel...I am 32 years old now and still spin that one at least twice a month, sometimes ten times in a row. Fuckin masterpiece of an EP, Music, Sound and, last but not least, Lyrics.
