Gimme head with hair, long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there hair, shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama, everywhere daddy, daddy
Hair
Long as God can grow it my hair
Let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas and a hive for bees
And a nest for birds, there ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my
Hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it my hair
I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!
They'll be ga ga at the go go
When they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond
Brilliantined, biblical hair
My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?
Hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it my hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it my hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it my hair
The song "Hair" by Zen is an ode to the beauty and freedom of long hair. The song opens with the singer claiming that they want a partner who has long, beautiful hair that they can play with. The next few lines describe different types of hair - "Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen," and adds that they want it "down to there" or shoulder length or longer. The chorus resounds with the repeated chorus of "Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it, my hair." The singer sings about how they want to let their hair fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees, how they want it to be a home for fleas and a hive for bees, and a nest for birds.
The second verse describes the different ways the singer wants their hair to be - straight, curly, fuzzy, snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty, oily, greasy, fleecy, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen, knotted, polka-dotted, twisted, beaded, braided, powdered, flowered, and confettied, bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied! The singer talks about how people will go ga-ga when they see them in their blond toga made of biblical hair. They even compare their hair to that of Jesus's, stating how Mary loved her son and asking why their mother doesn't love them. The singer ends the song with the final chorus of "Flow it, show it, long as God can grow it, my hair."
The song is a celebration of individuality and non-conformity, urging people to express themselves in their uniqueness. "Hair" was written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni for the musical "Hair," which deals with themes of anti-war activism, race, and sexual revolution. The song was wildly popular in the late 60s and early 70s, and this cover by Zen released in 2018, serves as an appropriate homage.
