Bittersweet Symphony
camila mendes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet
You're a slave to the money then you die
I'll take you down the only road that I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
Where all the veins meet, yeah

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Well I never prayed
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet
Trying to find some money then you die

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next

I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Camila Mendes's song "Bittersweet Symphony" delve into the complexities and struggles of navigating life's challenges, particularly focusing on the themes of existentialism, societal expectations, and personal growth.

The opening lines, "Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life, Trying to make ends meet, You're a slave to the money then you die," explore the harsh reality of life's demands and the pressure to constantly strive for financial success. The mention of being a "slave to the money" highlights the idea of being trapped in a cycle of working for material gain, ultimately leading to a sense of emptiness or disillusionment.

The repetition of "No change, I can change" reflects the internal conflict and desire for transformation within oneself. The lyrics depict a struggle between staying within the confines of one's comfort zone ("But I'm here in my mold") and the yearning for growth and evolution. This juxtaposition of stagnation and transformation captures the inherent paradox of human nature, where individuals may feel trapped by their own limitations yet also crave change and progression.

The verses also touch upon the theme of emotional catharsis and the search for solace in music and art. The lines "But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah, I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me" convey a sense of vulnerability and a longing for emotional release. The act of letting the melody shine and cleanse the mind symbolizes the power of music to provide comfort and healing in times of distress.

The repeated refrain of "But I'm a million different people from one day to the next, I can't change my mold" encapsulates the inherent complexity of human identity and the struggle to reconcile the various facets of one's self. The song's overarching message revolves around the idea that life is a bittersweet journey filled with challenges and contradictions, where individuals must confront their inner conflicts, societal pressures, and existential dilemmas in pursuit of self-discovery and personal fulfillment.

When I heared the song first, I thougt the four girls was singing it.
I'm watching the TV-show with German voices, so I don't know how the original voices sound like, except the songs.
But when I heared this version at first, I thought following:
Josy: Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Veronica: Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die
Cheryl: I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down (it sounds very, VERY like the German Cheryl)
Betty: You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah.

Because for me, this four voices in the song sound so different, and otherwise so simillar to their German speakers.
