Broken Heart
dr dog Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never really had a broken heart
I always played it kinda close to my chest
Love for me's just been a walk in the park
It doesn't really matter
It never really mattered

I never really had a broken heart
It's always such a shock to me
What looks to me like people going through the motions
But when it's over their hearts are broken.
I'm fine on the shelf
She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no
I'm fine on the shelf
She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no

Freedom from love
Freedom from the heartache

Freedom from love
Freedom from the heartache

Freedom from love
Freedom from the heartache

Freedom from love
Freedom from the heartache

I never really had a broken heart
You don't believe me, just look at my chest
The way some people like to run and hide
I never really, really
I never really

I never really had a broken heart
I've never really ever been undone
It's just playing house
If two can do it, you can do it too

I'm fine on the shelf
She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no
I'm fine on the shelf
She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no

I'm fine on the shelf
She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no
I'm fine on the shelf
She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no

I'm fine on the shelf
She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no
I'm fine on the shelf

She really loved him, I couldn't see it though
He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no

Overall Meaning

In Dr. Dog's song "Broken Heart," the singer sings about their lack of experience in heartbreak. They have always kept their heart "close to [their] chest," and love has always been easy and uncomplicated for them. The irony lies in the fact that the singer is observing others' broken hearts, but they are unable to empathize or truly understand the pain that comes with heartbreak.

The repeated refrain of "I'm fine on the shelf" suggests that the singer is content with their emotional detachment, preferring to be an observer instead of fully immersing themselves in romantic relationships. The lines "She really loved him, I couldn't see it though" and "He really loved her, but I don't believe it oh no" implies a sense of cynicism towards the idea of true, genuine love.

The chorus of "freedom from love" and "freedom from the heartache" reinforces the idea that the singer is comfortable with their emotional distance and doesn't see the value in experiencing the pain of heartbreak. Overall, "Broken Heart" serves as a commentary on the human tendency to either embrace or avoid emotional vulnerability in relationships.

Dr. Dog is so under-rated

+Raymond Lee Really? I've never met a single person that dislikes them.

@@ORDER4STU I think they meant that they aren't as popular as they think they should be?

@989Dave

Just the tempo and rhythm makes me smile and feel great vibes

@fokinmatt

Same ! Al their music is perfect to skate to

@SupriseBagProduction

them being my favorite band is an understatement.

@SwitcherooU

I love Dr. Dog's fascination with the self-marginalized - the Shadow People, the lonesome, the willfully alone, etc. Makes me rethink some of my life choices. Maybe you should too, before Dr. Dog's songs are about YOU.

@jenksm616

excellent comment!

@HuckleberrySlim

Ooh I like that too - reminds me of what Russell Brand praises of Morrissey, he is "the poet laureate of the dispossessed"
