Wir schreiben das Jahr 2003 . . . Eine in Amerika gerade neu aufgekommene Welle der emotionsgeladenen, melodischen Rockmusik bahnt sich auch so langsam ihren Weg in deutsche Landen und viele talentierte neue Bands kommen auf, die durch die Perfektionierung dieses Stils glänzen können oder sogar neue Innovationen in die sonst so festgefahrene Szene einbringen können.
Und auch im Rhein-Main-Gebiet, bisher immer bekannt für seinen Weinbau, tut sich etwas. Neue Rockbands sprießen wie Pilze aus dem Boden und erstmals beginnt sich auch so etwas wie eine Szene zu bilden. In dem kleinen Städtchen Gau-Algesheim zwischen Mainz und Bad Kreuznach erscheint im Frühjahr besagten Jahres erstmals eine neue junge Band auf der Bildfläche, bei der zu dieser Zeit noch niemand erahnen konnte, welch steile Entwicklung sie nehmen würde. Ihr Name: ear-O-tation.
Schon Ende 2002 kam bei den beiden Kumpels Christoph Krische und Ansgar Röttgers, die beide schon etliche Jahre Gitarre spielten und auch schon Erfahrungen in anderen Bands sammeln konnten, der Gedanke auf, die Band zu gründen, doch es mussten zuerst einmal die passenden Mitstreiter gefunden werden. Im Frühjahr 2003 konnte diese Suche erfolgreich abgeschlossen werden. Zu den beiden gesellten sich nun Stephan Lato Latosinszky, (der auf einer Party von seinem Kumpel Christoph dazu überredet wurde, Bass zu spielen und sich gleich am nächsten Tag ein entsprechendes Instrument besorgte), Christian Sproll (dessen rockiger Gesang den Sound der Band von nun an sehr prägen sollte) und als letztes Thomas Gietzen, der die Arbeit an den Fellen übernahm. Mit diesem komplettierten Line-up und einem originellen Bandnamen (ear-O-tation) war der Grundstein für eine weitere Karriere nun endgültig gelegt. Zur Wahl des Bandnamens äußerte sich Bassist Lato in einem Interview folgendermaßen: Wir haben nach der Beschreibung des Gefühls gesucht, das man empfindet, wenn die Musik von der Bühne ins Ohr geht. Und ear-O-tation machen ihrem Namen alle Ehre: Bei ihrer Musik kommen die Ohren wirklich ins Rotieren!
Bereits kurz nach Bandgründung begannen die Dinge gut zu laufen. Die erste Live-Feuerprobe erhielten sie Ende August bei ihrem ersten Auftritt auf Ansgars Feld, wo sie Cover-Versionen von Songs bekannter Rock-Bands zum Besten gaben. Nach und nach kamen immer mehr Auftritte hinzu und die Band festigte sich als eingespielte Gemeinschaft, die auch immer mehr Leute zu Konzerten zog. Die Cover-Songs kamen durchweg positiv an und sorgten für Stimmung, doch für ear-O-tation war gleich zu Beginn klar, dass es weit darüber hinaus gehen sollte und sie nicht nur als Cover-Band durch die Lande ziehen wollten. Und so machte man sich langsam daran, eigenes Material zu schreiben, wobei die Songs Yes Im Home und Nothing Changed als erste eigene Songs im Repertoire gleich gut aufgenommen wurden. Nachdem das Jahr 2004 durch mehrere Gigs in der lokalen Umgebung abgeschlossen wurde, wurde das darauffolgende Jahr 2005 zu einem entscheidenden Punkt in der Karriere von ear-O-tation. Im März und April konnten sie ihre ersten richtigen Erfolge verbuchen, als sie zuerst die Vorrunde des in der lokalen Umgebung bekannten Newcomer-Wettbewerbs Rock-n-Pop Youngsters gewannen und sich dann schlussendlich auch noch im Finale gegen fünf andere Bands durchsetzen konnten. Dieser Gewinn bescherte ihnen nicht nur neuerliche Anerkennung, sondern auch ein ordentliches Preisgeld und die Möglichkeit, auf größeren Festivals in der Umgebung zu spielen.
Während sie durch diese Auftritte und zahlreichen weiteren Gigs ihren Bekanntheitsgrad immer weiter ausbauen konnten, werkelten sie nebenbei an ihrem ersten Album und hatten bald immer mehr Songideen zusammen. Nach einigen Monaten Arbeit nahmen sie das Album in Ben Kühnls Rolling Studio auf und veröffentlichten das Werk schließlich am 22.10.2005 bei einem Konzert im Ingelheimer Keller Kunst Keller unter dem Titel A Maze Named Life. Auf den 11 Songs bewiesen sie ihr enormes musikalisches und textliches Potenzial erst so richtig und wussten zudem mit einem eigenständigen Sound voller Ideenreichtum zu begeistern. Temporeiche, energiegeladene Punk Rock-Songs reihten sich hier an ruhigere Mid-Tempo-Songs mit modernem Emo/Screamo-Einschlag, und ein Instrumentalstück und eine wunderschöne Akustik-Ballade mit Cello-Einsatz rundeten das Album ab, das zudem durch eine sehr gute Produktion bestach. In ihren Lyrics wagten sich die Jungs an ernste Themen wie z.B. unglückliche Liebe, Sehnsucht, innere Konflikte und alltägliche Probleme, und sie beschrieben bestimmte Gefühle und Situationen, die teilweise auch auf eigenen Erfahrungen beruhten.
Schon kurz nach Veröffentlichung des Werkes erhielt es großes Lob auf diversen Internetseiten und bei der Underground Musik-Community MyOwnMusic konnten sich zwei Songs des Albums sogar auf den obersten Rängen der User-Charts festsetzen. Zudem wurden sie bei der Rock Community Dosenmusik im Februar 2006 als Newcomer des Monats gefeaturet, nachdem sie durch den Gewinn eines Wettbewerbs in besagter Community schon einen Gig im Vorprogramm der bekannten kanadischen Emocore-Band Silverstein im Frankfurter Club o25 absolvieren konnten. Durch diese Erfolge und zudem durch den Aufbau neuer Kontakte mit anderen Bands und der Einrichtung eines Netzwerks im Internet konnten sie sich noch viele weitere Fans hinzugewinnen.
Knapp 3 Jahre nach Gründung der Band und ca. 50 gespielten Gigs, stehen ear-O-tation nun auf dem bisherigen Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere. Ihre Gigs beschränken sich nun nicht mehr nur auf das Rhein-Main-Gebiet, eine solide Fanbase steht hinter der Band und sorgt für gut besuchte Konzerte, mit ihrem Album konnten sie reichlich Anerkennung im Underground einheimsen und auch neue Songs sind bereits im Anmarsch, die nur darauf warten, den Fans präsentiert zu werden. Man darf auf jeden Fall gespannt sein, was die Zukunft für eine solch talentierte junge Newcomer-Band bereithält. Und eins ist sicher: ear-O-tation sind noch längst nicht an ihrem Ziel angelangt!
