Mercury
elapse-o Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been searching for forever through the shade of the glade
Came across you once but I could not say your name
So I watched you dancing in the rain and things will never be the same
I saw lightning strike, thunder bellows through the air, and the mist refracts the light and the creature came to lie
Sit there with your hands on your head, boy you think you got it all sorted
I'm crawling out the tomb, back from the dead, and I'm raining red mercury in your water supply
What cha gonna do when the fluid runs red,
What cha gonna do when she's under your bed
What cha gonna do when the fluid runs red,

What cha gonna do when she's under your bed

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song, "Mercury," paint a vivid picture of a mysterious encounter and the consequential aftermath that changes everything. The opening lines describe a search for an elusive entity, possibly a person, in a hidden and mystical setting filled with shadows and nature ("shade of the glade"). The singer recounts a moment when they had a chance encounter with this enigmatic figure but were unable to connect or address them by name, leaving a sense of unresolved tension.

As the narrative unfolds, the scene shifts to a powerful and potentially supernatural event unfolding as the figure dances in the rain. The imagery of lightning, thunder, mist, and a mysterious creature emerging adds a sense of foreboding and mystery. The contrast between the beauty of the dance and the chaos of the storm hints at a deeper significance to this encounter, suggesting a transformative experience for the singer.

The lyrics take a darker turn as the singer addresses someone directly, seemingly a male character, who believes they have everything figured out ("boy you think you got it all sorted"). The singer, symbolically rising from the dead, signifies a rebirth or resurgence, bringing forth a potent and symbolic substance, red mercury, to contaminate the water supply. This act can be interpreted as a metaphorical disruption or poisoning of the status quo, an act of retaliation or upheaval against complacency or arrogance.

The chorus of the song poses rhetorical questions that evoke a sense of uncertainty and impending danger. "What cha gonna do when the fluid runs red" and "What cha gonna do when she's under your bed" suggest a looming threat or consequence that cannot be ignored. The repetition of these questions emphasizes a sense of inevitability and consequence, highlighting the unpredictability and consequences of actions taken and decisions made. Overall, "Mercury" weaves a tale of intrigue, transformation, and consequences, inviting listeners to contemplate the complexities of fate and the choices we make.

I can't imagine the math required to calculate all of the fly bys and gravitational assists to pull off this mission, hats off to scientists/mathematicians.

@Dubayy Uae Only a supercomputer can do calculations of multi body systems. In school, we only calculated two body systems. The third body affects both the first and the second, each are entangled, making it exponentially more difficult. This is 5 bodies, the satellite, the Sun, mercury, Venus, earth.

I can’t figure out bank overdraft fees. The thought of this makes my brain hurt

I think the hardest part is not doing the math (someone correct me if I'm wrong but it's mostly College level Calc 2 ?) I think it would be trusting that you aren't wrong. That variables don't change. That there isn't solar wind or an asteroid or just something, any small thing that makes what you calculated useless

Anant Malik

With almost zero tolerance for error. The Mercury as well as the Sun himself are involved. :)
