Never Say Goodbye
friends Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With you along the road
And through it all there′d always be
Tomorrow's episode
Suddenly that isn't true
There′s another avenue
Beckoning, the great divide
Ask no questions, take no side
Whose course is braver run
Will ever be, ask one
What is done has been done for the best
Though the mist in my eyes might suggest
Just a little confusion about what I′ll lose
But if I started over I know I would choose
The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and tought me that friends never say
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Suddenly that isn't true
There′s another avenue
Beckoning, the great divide
I would choose
The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and taught me that friends never say
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
The song "Never Say Goodbye" by Friends is a poignant expression of the deep bonds of friendship that persist even when faced with change and uncertainty. The lyrics reflect the idea that despite sharing so much with a friend, you can suddenly find yourself at a crossroads where you must choose a new path with unknown outcomes. The uncertainty of the future can be disorienting, but the memories and experiences shared with your friend will never fade away.
The opening lines of the song build a strong sense of intimacy and trust that has developed between the singer and the person they're addressing, as they reflect on all they have shared along the road. However, this trust is suddenly tested when the singer realizes that they must move on without their friend, down an unknown path that they must face alone. This is the "great divide" that the song refers to, a threshold that forces the singer to choose a path without knowing what they will face.
The singer expresses their emotions with raw honesty, admitting to feeling confused and melancholic about the prospect of losing their friend. However, they ultimately take comfort in the knowledge that the joy and sadness they've experienced with their friend has shaped them into who they are today. The song ends with an affirmation that even though the singer and their friend may be physically separated, their bond will always remain strong - they will never say goodbye.
