From an early age Roel kept himself busy with finding new sounds and creating music. As GOSTO he and his live band melt the worlds of acoustic and electronic music together into one dubby trip-hop sound; raw, dark but still colourful.
Inspired by traveling, chaos and love as well as artists such as Flying Lotus, James Blake, Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley, GOSTO balances between fragile melodies and electronic extravaganza. In his song writing, he thrives to let you experience the thin line between simplicity and complexity. GOSTO takes you to places that you seem to recognize, but not yet have been before.
Roel’s band exists out of musicians how create a tight sound, despite of their totally different background. These four virtuosos have the ability play a ground shaking energetic but still very controlled live-show. Expect thrilling melodies, catchy vocals and deep, deep synths.
In June 2014, GOSTO released his debut EP (premiered on Noisey) and was amongst others support act for How to Dress Well.
GOSTO can be seen at several festivals and at different clubs.
GOSTO band:
Roel Vermeer: Vocals, synths & samples
Mats Voshol: Drums

What It Means
gosto Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
(is) Cracked an inch
The world is round
At least you think
I’ve seen you stay
At home for days
Without the sun
A life you live
In photographs
You never print
Will never last
I know you’re not
the ghost you seem
So tell me now
Do you know what it means
When the wind blows
Do you know what it means
When the sun glows
Do you know what it means
If you don’t go
Do you know what it means
From your window
Communicate
With fingertips
That never touch
The friends they miss
The 1s and 0s
Don’t help you live
They’ve got no lips
For you to kiss
In the first stanza, the lyrics describe a cracked window pane, which symbolizes a barrier or limitation in one's perspective or understanding. The line "The world is round, at least you think" suggests that the person's perception of reality may be distorted or incomplete. The reference to staying at home for days without sunlight implies a sense of isolation and confinement. The absence of sunlight also metaphorically represents a lack of joy and vitality in their life.
The second stanza delves into the person's reliance on capturing moments through photographs but failing to bring them to life by printing them. This could signify an inability to fully engage with the present and fully embrace experiences, as they constantly live in the past. The lyrics imply that this approach is unsustainable, as fleeting memories captured in photos cannot replace the richness of real experiences and connections.
The chorus poses a series of questions, inviting the listener to reflect on the deeper meaning of certain natural phenomena. The wind blowing and the sun glowing symbolize the presence of life and opportunities. By asking if the person understands what these occurrences mean, the lyrics question their awareness and willingness to engage with the world around them. The line "If you don't go...from your window" suggests that the person may be observing life from a distance, perhaps through their window, but not actively participating or seizing opportunities for growth and connection.
In the final stanza, the lyrics touch on the limitations of digital communication. The line "Communicate with fingertips that never touch" highlights the superficiality of online interactions, where physical touch and genuine connection are absent. The reference to "1s and 0s" represents the binary code underlying digital technology, emphasizing the impersonal nature of modern communication. The lyrics suggest that relying solely on digital communication leaves a longing for real human connection, as the ones and zeros do not possess the ability to offer authentic intimacy and emotional fulfillment.
Overall, "What It Means" explores themes of isolation, disconnection from reality, and the limitations of digital communication. It encourages the listener to reflect on the true meaning of life, urging them to step out of their comfort zone, embrace the world, and seek genuine connections.

I love that you compose with an opposing mix of feelings between the verse and chorus!
The viola (violin?) fits so well to tie everything together.
