What Can I Do

Not so long ago
You became my friend
How was I to know
That that wasn't where it end
Something changed
Inside of me
And whenever I'm with you
I feel so good and really happy
If only you knew
How I'd do anything for you
If only you could see
What all this is doing to me
I love you
And wish you loved me too
But there's nothing I can do
Except hope that in the end
You'll see me as more than a friend
I want you
And wish you'd want me too
But there's nothing I can do
Except wait hope and pray
That someday you'll feel the same way
So silently
I walk up to you
But I know deep down
You don't feel the same way I do
I look at you
You smile at me
Oh why can't I accept
That friends is all you wanna be
If only you knew
How I'd do anything for you
If only you could see
What all this is doing to me
I love you
And wish you loved me too
But there's nothing I can do
Except hope that in the end
You'll see me as more than a friend
I want you
And wish you'd want me too
But there's nothing I can do

Except wait hope and pray
That someday you'll feel the same way

Overall Meaning

In "I Do" by Colbie Caillat, the lyrics delve into the feelings of unrequited love and the inner turmoil that comes with it. The song describes the singer's journey from friendship to falling in love with someone who doesn't feel the same way. The song captures the vulnerability and longing that comes with wanting someone who only sees you as a friend.

The opening lines set the stage by revealing that at one point they were just friends. However, the singer couldn't have predicted that their feelings would change, leading to a realization of love. When they are together, the singer feels an overwhelming sense of happiness and contentment, yet there is a painful knowing that these feelings are not reciprocated. They yearn for the other person to understand the depth of their emotions and the lengths they would go to make them happy.

Despite the singer's hope and longing, they come to the realization that there is nothing they can do to change the other person's feelings. They are left to hope, wait, and pray that someday their love interest will see them in a different light. This unrequited love leaves the singer feeling invisible and wishing for a chance to be loved back.

Through its heartfelt lyrics, "I Do" captures the universal experience of unrequited love and the longing for something more. The song beautifully expresses the inner conflicts and desires one faces when caught in the emotion of loving someone who sees them only as a friend.

Sorry you missed the boat but I know exactly what you mean. I was 19 yrs old in 1999 when their MTV Unplugged album came out which made me a fan instantly. But it was just an appreciation for their music at that point...didn't realize how absolutely drop-dead gorgeous Andrea was until I bought this concert on DVD the following year. OMG instant crush from then on, and I got to watch her in-person twice during their US tour in 2004. But hey, at least now you get to watch all her videos at the click of a button whenever you feel like it. I had to do it the hard way: collect hard-to-find DVDs, many of which weren't sold in the US (look up DVD regions and NTSC vs. PAL if you want to know how lucky you are).

Here's two rare gems from 1996, very early in their career, that I found recently. Warning: young Andrea looks absolutely STUNNING in the first one (cry your heart out).

@Pbgum

@Brayn Storm omg thank you so much, yup my generation really missed the many boats of music

@braynstorm3149

@Pbgum 1028 Anytime. It's not all bad for your generation and the Millennials (I missed that bracket by a couple of years or so). Being a kid of the 90s, I absolutely hated 80s synth pop, but your generation took it to the next level and I just love all this 80s synth vibe in today's music now, especially with age (and I find that I actually love the classic 80s acts now).

As a side note, Andrea wrote a book a few years ago. It's a really good read of her mind and experiences if you're into that (especially for old fans like me). I haven't paid close attention to them after they took a break in 2005, so it's been fun to catch up on a lot of new stuff that they have done in recent years.

@janpangilinan2979

..same here. But with Sharon😊
