Dreams fading, time a wasting watching tides roll by
And at times I feel like Cooke staying on the run
After stirring up some souls trusting change gon' come
Then I stop and I think to myself
That life ain't all it seems
But it ain’t either, probably neither of that happiness brings
At any moment in time, our lives could crumble away
It's our loved ones, that we'll call on
On that very day
And at times I feel like Jonah being swallowed up whole
After running from the moments when I lose control
And at times I feel like David herding sheep for days
Facing giants in reliance of a thing called grace
Then I stop and I think to myself
That life ain't all it seems
We're all caught up, chasing money and things
But it ain’t either, probably neither of that happiness brings
At any moment in time, our lives could crumble away
It's our loved ones, that we'll call on
On that very day
We're all caught up, chasing money and things
But it ain’t either, probably neither of that happiness brings
At any moment in time, our lives could crumble away
It's our loved ones, that we'll call on
On that very day
In "Caught Up," Jae reflects on the fleeting nature of life and the pursuit of material wealth and status. The lyrics draw reference to various historical figures and biblical stories to convey the complexity of human existence and the search for true happiness.
The first verse alludes to Otis Redding, a legendary soul singer known for his emotional performances. "Otis on that dock on high" refers to the famous photograph of Otis Redding sitting alone on a dock, deep in thought. Jae relates to the feeling of watching time pass without achieving one's dreams.
The mention of Sam Cooke in the second verse refers to another influential soul singer who was known for his social activism. "Stirring up some souls trusting change gon' come" highlights Cooke's role as a catalyst for social change and Jae's own desire to make a difference in the world.
The chorus emphasizes the futility of chasing money and material possessions in the pursuit of happiness. Jae recognizes that true happiness is not derived from wealth, but from the support and love of our loved ones. The mention of potential loss and crumbled lives reminds listeners of the fragility of existence and the importance of cherishing those who matter most.
The second verse makes a reference to the biblical story of Jonah, who was swallowed by a whale after trying to escape his responsibilities. This symbolizes moments when Jae feels overwhelmed and loses control, similar to Jonah's predicament. The mention of David herding sheep and facing giants alludes to the biblical story of David defeating Goliath with reliance on grace, highlighting the power of faith and persistence.
