MEMORY

Of sentimental verse,
Nothing in my purse,
And chuckles
When the preacher said
For better or for worse,
How lovely it was.
Of Schubert's Serenade,
Little things of jade
And traffic jams
And anagrams
And bills we never paid,
How lovely it was.
We who could laugh over big things
Were parted by only a slight thing.
I wonder if we did the right thing,
Oh, well, that's life, I guess,
I love your dress.
Thanks for the memory
Of faults that you forgave,
Of rainbows on a wave,
And stockings in the basin
When a fellow needs a shave,
Thank you so much.
Thanks for the memory
Of tinkling temple bells,
Alma mater yells
And Cuban rum
And towels from
The very best hotels,
Oh how lovely it was.
Thanks for the memory
Of cushions on the floor,
Hash with Dinty Moore,
That pair of gay pajamas
That you bought
And never wore.
We said goodbye with a highball,
Then I got as high as a steeple,
But we were intelligent people,
No tears, no fuss,
Hooray for us.
Strictly entire nous,
Darling, how are you?
And how are all
Those little dreams
That never did come true?
Awfully glad I met you,
Cheerio and toodle-oo
Thank you,
Thank you so much.
The song "Memory" by Jay Wilber and his band is a nostalgic reflection on past experiences and relationships. In the first verse, the lyrics express gratitude for memories of sentimental moments and laughter, even when faced with financial struggles and tough times. The second verse recalls memories of specific experiences such as Schubert's Serenade, traffic jams, and bills never paid. Despite the slight differences that caused their parting, the singer reflects on the good times they shared.
The song continues with expressions of gratitude for the memories of forgiving faults, seeing rainbows on waves, and even the simple act of stockings in the basin. Memories of temple bells, Cuban rum, and towels from the best hotels also hold a special place in their heart. The final lines express fondness for a pair of pajamas and the last moments of their time together, ending on a high note.
Overall, the song is a tribute to the everyday moments and unique experiences that make up life's memories. It acknowledges that even when things aren't perfect and people part ways, the memories created together are still cherished.

Such a lovely number - they knew how to handle it !

Ha! The song I sang on local radio. They were broadcasting from Cookham Railway Station as I arrived home on the train. The lovely Lynda Mallet stuck a microphone under my nose and said sing a quick song... so I sang this one, short and sweet! A memory jerked up by the potency of cheap music. (I had to get The Master in somehow!)
