is watching if you're dancing alone god forbid someone
should find an impressionable soul
here's to your life may it be bright may you find love when you decide
Oh no, nothing is wrong I'm just dancing alone
atomized
I never saw this coming I never stood a chance I never rose above it now I'm delivered
make sure your focus
where your thoughts are aligned god forbid someone should change your impressionable mind
my neighbors and friends say I should've jumped my neighbors and friends are good for a bump
a blasé affair
where no one gets spared but no one can pay enough attention to care
atomized
I never saw this coming I almost stood a chance
I never rose above it now I'm delivered
what we could've been we should've been what we could've been I wanna show you what we could've been we should've been
I wanna show you can't we just try it again
The lyrics to "Atomized" by machinegum convey a sense of isolation and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. The opening lines caution against being observed while dancing alone, as it reveals vulnerability and suggests that someone easily influenced may be discovered. The singer then wishes for a bright and love-filled life, seemingly addressing an individual who has not yet made important decisions. The repeated phrase "Oh no, nothing is wrong I'm just dancing alone" emphasizes a sense of defiance and self-assurance, as if the act of dancing alone is seen as an act of rebellion against external judgment.
The following lines express the need to carefully direct focus towards thoughts and ideas that align with one's own perspective. There is a fear of having one's malleable mind changed by others, hinted at by the mention of judgment from neighbors and friends. However, their opinions are dismissed as insignificant, highlighting a disinterest in conforming to societal norms. The chorus, stating "atomized," suggests a breakdown of individuality, perhaps due to societal pressures or feeling disconnected from others.
The lyrics shift to reflect a realization that the singer never anticipated the circumstances they find themselves in or the challenges they face. They acknowledge never rising above these difficulties and feeling defeated. The lines "what we could've been, we should've been. I wanna show you, can't we just try it again" convey a sense of regret and a desire to revisit missed opportunities and potentially create a different outcome.
