Tangled
maroon five. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm full of regret
For all the things that I have done and said
And I don't know if it'll ever be okay to show
My face 'round here
Sometimes I wonder if I disappear

Would you ever turn your head and look
To see if I'm gone
'Cause I fear

There is nothing left to say to you
That you want to hear
That you want to know
I think I should go
The things I've done are way too shameful

You're just an innocent
A helpless victim of a spider's web
And I'm an insect
Going after anything that I can get
So you'd better turn your head and run
And don't look back
Cause I fear

There is nothing left to say to you
That you want to hear
That you want to know
I think I should go
The things I've done are way too shameful

And I have done you so wrong
Treated you bad
Strung you along
Oh, shame on myself
I don't know how I got so tangled up
'Cause I fear

There is nothing left to say to you
That you want to hear
That you want to know

I think I should go
The things I've done are way too shameful

Overall Meaning

In "Tangled," Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine confesses his guilt and regrets to a lover, a person whom he clearly cares deeply for. According to the lyrics, he has wronged this person so much that they are now a helpless victim of a spider's web. He compares himself to an insect, going after anything he can get, while his lover is the innocent party in this story. The chorus repeats, "There is nothing left to say to you that you want to hear, that you want to know, I think I should go, the things I've done are way too shameful." Despite his love for this person, he feels that he has hurt them too much to continue the relationship.

Throughout the song, Levine's vocals convey his immense sorrow and regret. He mourns over the fact that he has treated this person badly, strung them along, and left them feeling tangled in the web of his deceit. He acknowledges that he has done this person so wrong and feels ashamed of himself. Although he fears losing them, he chooses to acknowledge his faults, and in doing so, tries to save them from further hurt.
