Let Me
mary is Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me love but not too loud now
I don't want the lungs to give out
Give me warmth but not too close now
I don't want the house to burn down

Hold me close but let me go
I don't think you want to know
Draw me in and breathe me out, slow
Open up the dirty window
It's hard to see and hard to feel me
Come inside so you can leave me

And shut the door behind you
And then would you remind me to
Check the locks before I sleep
To wash the glass between each drink

Hold me close but let me go
I don't think you want to know
That you could love me and I'd never know
I try to love me but it never shows

Hold me close, don't let me go
I want to know, I want to know

Hold me close, don't let me go,
I want to know, you make me want to know

Overall Meaning

In "Let Me In" by Mary Is, the lyrics delve into themes of love, vulnerability, and the fear of losing control. The opening lines, "Let me love but not too loud now, I don't want the lungs to give out," convey a sense of caution in expressing emotions too intensely, fearing that it might be overwhelming or suffocating. This juxtaposition of passion and restraint sets the tone for the complexities of relationships explored in the song.

The desire for intimacy is conveyed through the lines, "Give me warmth but not too close now, I don't want the house to burn down." Here, the lyrics suggest a yearning for closeness tempered by a fear of getting too attached and potentially being consumed by the intensity of the connection. This fear of losing control is further emphasized in the repeated plea to "Hold me close but let me go," reflecting a desire for both intimacy and independence.

The imagery of a "dirty window" that is "hard to see and hard to feel" hints at the emotional barriers and difficulties in communication within the relationship. The metaphorical act of opening the window to let someone in symbolizes a vulnerability and a willingness to be seen and understood, despite the challenges involved. The conflicting emotions of wanting to be close yet feeling the need to maintain a sense of distance create a sense of tension and ambivalence in the dynamics of the relationship.

The repeated refrain of "Hold me close but let me go, I don't think you want to know" captures the internal conflict of wanting to be loved and understood while harboring doubts about whether one is truly deserving of that love. The uncertainty and self-doubt expressed in the lyrics underscore a deeper emotional struggle with self-acceptance and the fear of being vulnerable and exposed. The desire to be held close while simultaneously feeling the need to push away reflects a nuanced emotional landscape fraught with insecurities and unresolved emotions.

Ultimately, "Let Me In" by Mary Is is a poignant exploration of the complexities of love, intimacy, and self-discovery. The lyrics convey a profound yearning for connection and understanding, tempered by a sense of fear and apprehension. Through evocative imagery and introspective reflections, the song captures the intricacies of human relationships and the inner turmoil of seeking acceptance and love while grappling with one's own vulnerabilities and insecurities.

Let Me Into Your Heart - Mary Chapin Carpenter
You're like a cool breeze to a hot spell
You're like a long drink to a dry well
Oh I know by now there's no use thinking
That it's something in that water I've been drinking
Cause I would not need even one more drop if you'd
just let me into your heart
you're like a blue sky to a grey day
you're like a new try to an old way
Oh I never needed much convincing 'bout that something
in my life that's been missing
But I think I know where to find that part if you'd
just let me into your heart
I got a past baby, now who doesn't

I won't ask you to think that I wasn't
Who I was back then, yes it's true
But that was when I didn't know you
You're like a sweet sight to these tired eyes
You're like the first light after a long night
Oh I never believed in the hands of fate
But to be with you baby, I believe I'd wait
Til the end of time for a chance to start
If you'd just let me into your heart

You're like a sweet smile to these tired eyes
You're like the last mile on a long ride
Oh I never believed in the arms of fate
But to be in yours darling, I believe I'd wait
Til the end of time for a chance to start
If you'd just let me into your heart
Til the end of time, baby I can start
If you'd just let me into your heart

Great little song.  This lady has got the most beautiful smile I have ever seen.  Love her!!!

@almostfm

+Rock Drummer I got to meet her about 1990 when the radio station I was at sponsored a concert.  I forget who the headliner was, but she opened for them, and she killed it that night.  After the gig we got to go on her bus and meet her, and when the road manager went to the back of the bus to let her know we were there, the first thing she said was "Why do they want to meet me?"  She was charming and sweet and if she didn't live on the other side of the country I'd marry her.

@timekeeper46

She comes across as a beautiful person in every way.  Glad you got to meet her.  Wish I could some day.

@anitaharris9095

She has an infectious smile and a great voice. What I like is she doesn't dress all fancy and her hair regardless of length seems to always be in the same style. She realizes on her voice and she can definitely back her faith in her voice up. I love all of her songs.
