Cigarette
mesh-29 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hotel rooms materialistic thoughts,
Thoughts clutter up you head
You're so alive but somethings dead,
Let it burn and fade, fade away
Cornered in the room you light a cigarette and leave
Throw it on the ground and let it burn
She has a sentimental way,
Scans photos from her younger days
But all the friends she had have moved away,
And it's hard to stay in love
When there's nothing there to keep you up,
Expectation hurts so let it burn and fade away,
Let it burn and fade, fade away..
Cornered in the room you light a cigarette and leave
Throw it on the ground and watch these ashes turn from leaves.
It isn't worth the aggravation, sing your soul to sleep,
Throw it on the ground and let it burn
Cornered in the room you light a cigarette and leave
Throw it on the ground and watch these ashes turn from leaves
You know we're dying away
I feel were dying
Sometimes I feel were dying
Sometimes I feel were dying
When it's bringing me down
The song "Cigarette" by the band Mesh-29 is a melancholic tune that delves into the struggles of two individuals in different situations. The first verse talks about someone spending sixteen hours of their day wishing they were somewhere else, stuck in a hotel room with materialistic thoughts cluttering up their mind. They feel alive, but also empty inside, as expectations weigh heavy on them. The chorus repeats the phrase "expectation hurts so let it burn and fade away" like a mantra, urging the person to let go of these expectations and find peace.
The second verse shifts perspective to a woman who is looking at old photos, feeling sentimental but also a bit lost. All of her friends have moved away, leaving her feeling alone and struggling to stay in love with herself and her life. The chorus repeats once again, emphasizing the idea of letting go of expectations and finding a way to release the pain that comes with them.
The song's title, "Cigarette", is used as a metaphor for burning away the negativity and pain that the characters in the song are feeling. Lighting a cigarette is an act of release, a way to take a break and step outside of yourself for a moment. The repetition of the image of throwing the cigarette on the ground and watching it burn is a powerful image of letting go and moving on.
Overall, "Cigarette" is a song about struggle and pain, but also about finding a way to move beyond it. The message of letting go of expectations and finding peace in the present moment is a powerful one that anyone can relate to.
