I honestly think the 3 divorces joke was terrible. The first divorce was not his fault at all. Carol didn’t want to be with him anymore even though he wanted to be with her.

Rachel and Ross were drunk out of their mind when they got married. And he was right they should never allow people to get married when they are completely hammered.

The only one that made sense to joke about was his marriage to Emily. It was his fault he rushed this relationship. He married her so fast without really thinking about it. Then fucked up by saying the wrong name at the alter.

The divorce jokes should’ve just be harnessed toward the Emily relationship.

The Carol and Rachel divorces should’ve been excluded.

@Melindora Nightsilver lol he almost left because Susan and Carol were being...the way they were being right in this video. They were trying to push him out of the discussion involving the baby. And all this after Carol CHEATED on Ross with Susan. I can understand the baby having Carol's last name but who the hell is Susan? The one who stole the wife and now trying to steal the baby that's who.

Plus there was no reason for them to believe that Ross didn't want to get involved. This is the first time we're seeing them discussing about the baby. You're saying "it was early on"; I think people are referring to "early on" Susan when they say they hate her. And it's not as if she was nice to him later on, she just relented. The point is, this whole drama in the hospital shouldn't have happened in the first place.

@VanguardPlays Once again, it was early on. In fact, Ben never ended up with Carol or Susan's last na me. It ended up being Geller. I'm guessing they were not sure whether or not Ross actually wanted to be involved. Remember, during that first appointment, he almost left. He changed his mind. I think Ben having Carol's last name actually would have made sense. While Ross was a dad to Ben, we don't see or hear about him too much. We mainly see Ben while he was an infant/toddler. Now, i'm sure Ross did spend time with Ben and it just wasn't mentioned, but it does seem like Carol had primary custody. She also would have probably been the one to deal with a lot of the school stuff because she was a 6th grade teacher. It may have been easier for her to deal with any meetings, etc. I don't think Susan's name should have been there but I think the intention was that since Susan may have been living with Carol, she would help out with raising Ben, dealing with homework, learning, going to school events, school trips, etc. Especially if Carol or Ross couldn't be there. Susan and Carol were not technically married when they did that ceremony later in the series, it wouldn't be legal until later. Carol probably wanted Susan to feel included since she wasn't biologically related to Ben.

Also keep in mind, if it weren't for Susan, Ross never would have felt Ben kick. He may also never would have talked to Emma in-utero.

@VanguardPlays People can discuss names early on but that doesn't mean those names stick. Remember, Ross and Rachel originally agreed on Isabella or Delilah.

Also remember that she Susan claimed thst her and Carol referred to Ross as Bobo the Sperm Guy, it was at the tail end of a conversation where they both talked & traded barbs. That line could very well have been a lie meant to annoy Ross before he left. If it was said to Ben while Carol was pregnant, it was Susan who probably said it once. Carol didn't tend to insult Ross. She may call him on some stuff but their relationship after the divorce was pretty amicable.

@Alina Schmidt No its not. They made it a point to push Ross out and acted like it wasn't his child from day 1. She may have been a bonus parent but the way she acts so entitled is gross and wrong. Ross was a good, stable guy and a good father, she only treated him that way out of jealousy and entitlement. It's her step child, not her baby. If Ross was a terrible person or a drug addict it would make sense and be justifiable- but he's not and their behavior was not.

This is why I always disliked Susan, she overstepped her role as a girlfriend and immediately made the decision on naming the baby who wasn’t even hers and made Ross out to be the bad guy. Like sis you and Carol were having an affair and yet they always attacked Ross. I never understood why Susan disliked Ross he did nothing but love Carol and tried to be there for his child and yet he almost didn’t even have a say in his kids name.

I've watched and rewatched this show over the years. From adolescence to adulthood and I still will never manage to understand why one of the critiques against Ross is about this situation. Susan had absolutely no right to the baby. She had no right to name it or to give it her last name. That baby is a product of Carol and Ross's relationship, not of Susan and Carol's. There was no agreement between them for Ross to be a donor in order to allow Carol and Susan to have a baby together. Ross is the father and Carol is a STEPmother. That's it. Yes, Carol is her partner, but her input is limited to making sure Carol is healthy and taking care of her pregnancy. Ross is the one who should be involved in naming the kid and figuring out what last name the kid is going to be given. Susan is overstepping and Carol is allowing her. This entire situation is why I was never able to tolerate Susan and Carol.

@hello I do think Carol overstepped a bit HOWEVER to act like Susan should have no input or responsibility when it came to Ben is absurd. Susan was most likely living with Carol so she would have been around Ben a lot. I'm sure Carol appreciated Susan taking care of Ben while she took a nap, had a shower, etc. I'm sure Susan probably got up to help with Ben as well. Susan loved him as if he were her own. In the end, Ross came up with Ben's name and he gets referred as Ben Geller. Ross was at the appointments during her pregnancy, he was at the Lamaze classes and the birth.
The Bobo the sperm guy comment came after they had gone back and forth, with Ross making comments about they having so many books about lesbians and him criticizing Susan for speaking the the baby in utero. Susan clapped back at him but that doesn't mean she and Carol actually referred to Ross that way when he wasn't around.

You're acting like the child not being planned changes the fact that the child was conceived with Ross, not Susan and that it was conceived during their relationship, not as an act of sperm donation for Susan and Carol. Susan is the baby's stepmom, not her mother. Big whoop for them telling Ross that he can be involved as much as he wants. Are we supposed to clap for them for doing what they're supposed to do? Susan is overstepping. Period. There's no way of going around it. Her role in this entire situation is limited to the role of Carol's partner. Her role is to look after Carol, not to be the baby's mother. Her job doesn't extend to getting a decision on the baby's last name while Ross doesn't. It doesn't extend to cutting Ross out of any decisions involving the baby because it is not her baby.

I think the writers were building up a storyline where Susan the lesbian pushes Ross out of his own son's life. That line, "This is my baby too" was a bit over the top. They were going to adhere to bad lesbian stereotypes but for whatever reason, they decided not to and made Ross and Susan's relationship far more comical. I was happy when they wrote it like that, all 3 of them behaving on civil terms regardless of sexual orientation, and Susan respecting Ross as the biological father of her adopted son. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Yeah. I have both a step father and a step mother. My parents divorced when I was a little. It's like having two sets of parents except my step mom and step dad have boundaries. They didn't have the final say. They offered an opinion that's it. They didn't take over or try to replace bio parent. In my opinion, the relationship between a child and step parent should never be forced but decided by the child abd step parent.

This has nothing to do with Carol and Susan being a lesbian couple. It has everything to do with Carol being married to Ross and conceived a child. It was Carol's and Ross' child. He has equal rights as Carol in this. The third person can just wait in the corner. Plus, if Ross wanted to fight for his rights, he could've won cause Carol cheated on him. I thoroughly dislike Susan. What an awful character. I don't see any good things about Susan in the entire series. (Not saying that Ross is all perfect, cause he's definitely not.) Like Pheobe said, Carol did a number on Ross. That kind of shit will mess a person up long term. Susan is whatever, but there was no reason for Carol to be so cold toward Ross during this time. After 7+ years of being together, she was really going to leave his name off of the birth certificate like he never mattered. There was also another episode, where Ross is disappointed because Carol/Susan only let him have Ben once a week. They agree to let him have more time, but I thought that was incredibly sad that he had to complain about missing moments to get more time with Ben.

@Alina Schmidt That is another thing I detested about this show, but was normal for the times. She cheats, takes everything and still gets custodial/primary custody. I get that courts tend to favor the mother, especially when the child is a baby, but only one day a week as part of their arrangement was crap. Typically from what I've seen(& growing up with friends of divorced parents), the non-custodial parent typically gets the kid(s) every other weekend plus one day a week as well as phone calls throughout the week. Ross was shortchanged here. I agree with you in that it created a plot, but I roll my eyes when people(not you) suggest that Ross was an absent and careless father. I liked the arrangement that Rachel and Ross had with Emma. Even when they were not together, they co parented like good parents should.

Carol and Susan were so deliberately exclusionary to Ross. First they don't even include him in settling on a name (at the very least, Carol shows some leeway on Ross' suggestion) and then automatically put Susan's last name in there as a double-barrel but fight not to have Ross'. Ross and Carol had been together at this point and for Susan to neatly reduce all of that history, love and time down to 'we all know how hard it is to give sperm' and for Carol to not even fight to defend the memories of their relationship, their marriage, is really nasty. They were shown very confrontational with him in the earlier seasons, ganging up against him without taking the time to remember that Carol got tonnes of their possessions (Ross confirms this in episode one), got the new relationship while Ross was left high and dry, it's alluded to many times that Carol cheated on him or at the least pursued a connection with Susan right up until it became an intimate relationship (rather than telling Ross sooner) and yet they always carry an atmosphere about them that says 'You're in the wrong for not supporting our relationship' as they continually arrive in his life as the couple that started while he was still married to Carol and with one of those people still making appearances in his life being Susan, the woman who took Carol from Ross. Yet when Ross says he finds an adult drinking breast milk disgusting Carol immediately pulls her dismissive face with a 'My breast milk is disgusting?' and Susan eggs it on with 'This should be fun' and same again when we hear about how Ross used to dress up as Bea. He remembers it, is laughed at by Monica, Susan and Carol, with the former chasing him around to mock him for it, then he actually plays along and reminds them what the joke was and they just laugh at him because he initially wanted his son to like the same toys he did. And yet when Carol and Susan then nearly call the wedding off for good, the first place Carol goes to whine and look for a shoulder to cry on his her ex husband who she adamantly tried to fight off allowing his child to have his surname while allowing the woman she all but guaranteed cheated on him for to have her surname in the mix without Ben being her child. It's just crazy.

Ross put up with a lot from these two. Anyone else would have never wanted to see their ex and the person they cheated on you for but he did it for his son and out of respect for Carol. And still they find any way they can to make him out to be public enemy number one in anything to do with raising Ben or continuing with life after Ross and Carol's divorce. It's a bit of a shame the show early on portrayed them more in the right and Ross more the grump or the stickler as he was absolutely right at every turn with fighting how they treated him.

I only came to this video to see If anyone else thought Susan was wrong trying to have any input and pushing Ross to the side like he isn't The FATHER.
Wasn't she Just a Girlfriend at this time anyway. She's way overstepping her boundaries here. Acting as if Ross was just a sperm donor and not the ex-husband/Biological father who was cheated on after 7 long faithful years.

ross was obviously jealous towards susan and later developed jealousy issues because of how his marriage to carol ended, but i also think that in her own way susan was jealous of ross too. susan always seems to try to one-up ross when she gets the chance and never let him forget she was the one who was with carol. susan may have been the one carol chose, but ross was still a big part of carols life, and susan would have to have known how great carol and ross were together. i just found their dynamic interesting and i kinda wish that we got to see more of them together in the later seasons.

Carol had a lot of nerve. First she has an affair with Susan while married to Ross, and now she is behaving as if cutting out the father from his baby's life is completely natural. I never liked Carol. Ross was such a great guy and the bigger person. He actually stepped in and gave away Carol at hers and Susan's wedding when Carols own parents bailed on her. Poor Ross deserved so much better.

you know that's how i felt in the beginning the show had them treat ross like he was a sperm donor and was irrelevant to the childs life as much as susan would be part of the kids life, decisions name, school, religion, etc. all those are to be decided between ross and carol regardless if they're divorced or not, now susan may make a suggestion or two but not be demanding like she was in the early part of the show

Although the writing in this show is amazing, one thing that pisses me off is the fact that Friends never deeply acknowledge the mental and emotional damage Susan and Carol did to Ross. He was cheated on, pushed away as the father, and the show acted like it was all one big joke. If that was real life it would be a much more horrific situation.

Actually, they did. There's a scene where Phoebe says that Ross was alright before breakup with Carol and that he became paranoid and untrusting after the split. A sitcom can only acknowledge it so far. It's not a drama.

How the show treated Susan and Carol is something that will never sit right with me. They got away with way too much. Never got a come uppance. Ross only getting to see Ben on occassion even doe rightfully its his son and its not like he chise to abandon them. I know its a show but i can see this happening in real life too. Have Susan seen the prices of sperm donors, they aren't exactly cheap let alone free. An old family friend struggled with having kids, so they try to use a sperm donor. They spend over 1,000 dollars and they didn't get a refund when it failed. If Susan and Carol didn't want Ross involved maybe they should have PAID for a sperm donor themselves, instead of expecting Ross to be a FREE sperm donor.

I know that this is just a show, but it's such an infuriating scene. Let's imagine Susan was a dude that Carol cheated with and they were now dating. How long has it been? 1 month or 2, since Carol & Ross split? This behavior would not be acceptable at all if the new boyfriend would try to exclude the real father. How is it portrayed as okay if a gay girlfriend does it? They are really just using lesbianism as an excuse to bully Ross, in a way really bad writing and I wonder if the writers were homophobic to portray the one gay couple as devils?

I hated the situation about Susan, Ross, Carol and the baby! I doesn't matter if they're divorced. HE is the father. Susan is just the stepmother. It just drives me nuts when she says it's her baby too, because it's not! NONSENSE SHIT
The child receives the mother's and the father's name. End of the story. They don't want his opinion about his sun's name, don't want the child to have his name (instead, let's put the stepmothers name), then why they told him they wanted him to be involved? It's not their decision anyway!
What the fuck?! If I'm pregnant and start a relationship with another man, I'd never put my boyfriend's or even husband's name on him and wouldn't accept him acting like my sun's father unless the real father wasn't involved. It's so fucking annoying!

Omg today I saw Jessica Hecht at a play in Boston ("The Cherry Orchard") and was really impressed with the actress playing Ranevskaya, the leading female role, and wondered who she was. I looked her up online, and saw that she was Susan from "Friends"!!!!! It's unbelievable because of how good of an actress she is because I did not recognize her at all even though I watched the show so much in high school. If you see this, Ms. Hecht, you are an amazing actress! The way you played Ranevskaya was really realistic, and I liked how she looked sweet and innocent and naive. When the camera in the multimedia show zoomed in on your face near the end, I thought "she must have been in a movie before" and it's true. Thank you, I loved the show

do...people realize how important non-biological parents are? Friends consistently makes it a point to highlight non-conventional parenting styles. Though Phoebe gave birth to the triplets, Frank and Alice are their "real" parents. Or, even though Monica and Chandler adopted their children, they are the parents, not Erica who gave birth to them. By the same logic, while it's absolutely understandable why Ross is standing up for himself considering the situation all around, but it's not okay to undermine Susan as a parent just because she's not biologically related to Ben. She's the one who's actually taking care of him 24/7.
