Rainbow
slowthai Lyrics

Brown sugar never been so sweet
But vanilla ice cream is my favorite dish
Blacker the berry, the sweeter the drip
Make a cheesecake, last bit, we can split it
Why you care what my pigment is?
Held me down, I was progressing
Reminded me that my skin tone's rich
L-o-l slowthai in 'fits
Primitive with your naughty ways
Kamikaze put me in a cage
Brown eyes and my shit ain't blue
Exotic trip it's shocker couture
What am I to do?
Won't hire me, then they hire you
Fire me but don't fire you
Lock me up but unboxing you

Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone, UFO
Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone, UFO
Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone, UFO
Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone, UFO

Not white, not black either
Asian, latina, not your nigga
Not your honkey or shopkeeper
Skin thick, I throw stones, break windows
Glass homes, break bones, we don't shiver
Colorblind to see the light they grow
Blossom like roses
Brush my hand off, what's the motive?
You got dandruff on your clothing
Call me coon, I Looney Tune
Bust your nose with a sliver spoon
Monkey noises, big baboon
White boy wasted in the zoo
Bones too dense to swim the lagoon
Lochness, wutless innocent yute
Colorblind, swear we're all blue
No difference between us two

Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone UFO
Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone, UFO
Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone, UFO
Colors of the rainbow
You can't have a rainbow
Without a little rain though
Don't rub off and stain though
Stereotype 'cause my skin tone, UFO

When the color's gone colorblind
Red, white and blue
Union Jack united who?
When the color's gone, what am I to you?
In theory you're colorblind
Race just hysteria and when the color's gone
Just the UFO understand my logic
Colorblind see obvious (obvious)
When the color's gone colorblind
Red, white and blue
Union Jack united who?
When the color's gone, what am I to you?
In theory you're colorblind

Race just hysteria and when the color's gone
Just dotted line (understand) colorblind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to slowthai's song "Rainbow" are an assertion against the stereotyping and persecution of people based on their skin color. In the first verse, he makes the point that different skin colors have their own unique characteristics that are valuable in their own way. He talks of how his dark skin tone is a rich one, and likens it to brown sugar, while acknowledging that he also loves the taste of vanilla ice cream. He goes on to speak of his own experiences of being held back despite progressing, simply because of his skin color. As a result, he has become more "primitive" in his ways and is now more inclined towards being naughty or rebellious.

In the second verse, slowthai takes on the kind of prejudices that people hold against those who do not fit into their own specific categories. Slowthai himself is a mixed-race individual who sees himself as neither white nor black, nor Asian or Latina. He is simply himself, and sees himself as being beyond categorization. He challenges those who would insult him with derogatory names and instead asserts his own strength and resilience in the face of such attacks.

Overall, "Rainbow" is an important song that addresses the issue of colorism, and reminds us that every person's skin color makes them unique, valuable, and worthy of respect.
