Stones
the Wandas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People talkin' tryin' to break us up
Why don't they let us be
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But talk don't bother me

People talkin' tryin' to break us up
When they know I love you so
I don't care what the people may say
I'll never never let you go

I've been abused
In my heart and soul
I've been abused
Been abused, been abused, and I've been stoned

People talkin' tryin' to break us up
Man, scandalize my name
They'll say anything just to make me feel bad
Yes, anything to make me ashamed

I've been abused
In my heart and soul
I've been abused
Been abused, been abused, and I've been stoned

People talkin' tryin' to break us up
Man, scandalize my name
They'll say anything just to make me feel bad
Yes, anything to make me ashamed

Oh, yes, I know
Don't you know it, too

Yes, I know it
Don't you know it, too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Wandas's song "Stones" convey the theme of resilience in the face of criticism and judgment from others. The first verse expresses the singer's frustration with people who are trying to interfere in their relationship and suggests that they should be left alone. The line "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but talk don't bother me" implies that the opinions and rumors being spread about them have no real impact on their love or commitment.

The second verse reinforces the singer's unwavering love for their partner despite the scrutiny they face. Despite knowing that others may disapprove or gossip about their relationship, they declare that they don't care what people say and will continue to hold onto their love.

The chorus adds an additional layer of depth to the lyrics, as the singer reveals that they have experienced emotional and psychological mistreatment in the past. The lines "I've been abused, in my heart and soul" allude to a history of enduring hardship and being mistreated by others. The repetition of the phrase "been abused, been abused, and I've been stoned" suggests that the singer has faced not only emotional abuse but also literal persecution and judgment.

The final lines of the song convey a sense of strength and self-assurance, in defiance of the negativity and criticism directed toward them. The repetition of "Don't you know it, too" suggests a shared understanding between the singer and their partner, as both are aware of the unwarranted judgments and refuse to let them affect their relationship.

Overall, "Stones" highlights the resilience and determination of the singer to stay true to their love, despite the constant barrage of criticism and gossip from others.

Heard this on my pandora "groovy" 60's station. Was surprised to catch a song I had never before heard on there.

Later found out it's relatively recent. Couldn't tell - it fit right in!

I've quickly become a Wandas fan. Great music. This song, in particular, has that sort of hippie groove mixed in with a bit of Chicago vibe.

Beautiful!
