Break

And the thoughts it brings
The darkness can sometimes
Be a pleasure to me
I stand around on the outside
I've been peering from the edge
Looking for the answers
It's from this place we'll find our peace
And reconcile our bitterness
We have to, we have to break
Break, break, break
Wash away, wash away
It's form this loneliness
And the fear it brings
That new doors can open up
And be a savior to me
So open my mind
(I'll)
Open my heart
It's the only way to breathe
It's just a trick of the lights she said
So don't panic, now don't panic
It's from this place we'll find our peace
And reconcile our emptiness
We had to we had to break, break, break
Wash away
It's just a trick of the lights she says
So don't panic, now don't panic
Wash away
Don't panic don't panic
It's just a trick of the lights
(Don't panic)
The Cinematics' "Break" is a song about the process of self-discovery and finding one's peace in loneliness. The opening lines "I like my loneliness, and the thoughts it brings, the darkness can sometimes be a pleasure to me" set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer expresses contentment in being alone and welcomes the thoughts that come with it, acknowledging that even in the darkness, there can be a joy found within.
Throughout the song, the singer touches on the idea of searching for answers and finding peace in difficult times. They stand on the outside looking in, peering from the edge, searching for answers to questions they may never ask. It is from this place of loneliness and fear that new doors can open up, and the singer sees it as a savior.
The chorus brings the notion that breaking away from these emotions is necessary to find peace, to reconcile one's bitterness and emptiness. The singer repeats the phrase "wash away," emphasizing the need to let go of negativity and find solace in their loneliness. The song concludes with the comforting line "It's just a trick of the lights," which reassures the listener that everything will be okay.
Overall, "Break" is a powerful song that touches on themes of loneliness, self-discovery, and finding peace that will resonate with many.

How these boys slipped under the radar back in 2007 with this, their debut Album defies belief??!??? - 'A Strange Education' is quite simply a spectacular masterpiece. Fact.

I hope they reform someday. I'm Colombian so no chance for me to ever see them live unless I moved somewhere closer to them lmao

They were an amazing band. I saw them at the Cockpit, Leeds, supporting editors. It was a tiny venue so we chatted to Scott afterwards. He was really sweet and seemed surprisingly shy for a frontman. Good times.
