MorpheusVector, this song is 60’s BritPop in the same vein as the Beatles, Kinks, Hollies, and Herman’s Hermits. There’s other tracks that the Dukes did that were more psych. Not this one tho.

If I had never heard Andy Partridge's voice and you told me this was released in 1966 I would have thought, "What a gem! How come this song wasn't a hit?".
This is the equivalent, in '60's psychedelic Brit Pop. to the Stray Cats for '50's American Rock and Roll. Absolutely brilliant.

Wondering how they achieved the jangly guitar tone that you hear at the head of the song, and throughout. To me it sounds like a semi/hollow body electric capo'ed up the neck a bit (Rickenbacker, Danelectro?). It's got the single coil jangle going on but there's also a certain resonance to it that makes me think it was not a solid body guitar. That, or it was just a Tele (lol). Either way, I remember the moment I first heard this guitar part and I knew I was in for a treat. Little did I know, the pop mastery that would then magically unfold. It's unexpected gems like these that keep you totally hooked.

Not just the Hollies, this album is heavily influenced by the Beatles in particular their Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band era. And, if I'm not mistaken, Shiny Cage uses the same guitar verses in "I'm Only Sleeping" off the Revolver album by the Beatles.

This is a good example of how the listener loses some of the experience the band intended to give. The Alice in Wonderland-like spoken words at the end are to take a listener right into the next track. It’s supposed to serve that purpose, otherwise it seems like just a really odd song ending.

Depending on how old you are, It got some play on LA radio station KROQ in the late 80's early 90's. So possibly got played elsewhere I'm sure. This was the first Dukes song I heard, before i even knew it was actually XTC, and I'm also a big fan of XTC. And was at the time. Couldn't figure out why they sounded so familiar, but it wasn't XTC, until I learned about the group some years later and bought their CD's

Considering the Swindon connection through Justin Hayward, I'm somewhat surprised not to hear more of of an obvious Moody Blues influence in any of the Duke's songs. Perhaps just a hint of Hayward-era Blues here, though.
