The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Prรถfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Sticking up and sticking out
Iโฒve got too much to say, can't seem to control my mouth
Tryna get in my way
All the time,always
Stand up for me,stand up to you
Gotta do what I gotta
Making new friends,along the way
Cause Iโฒm a rebel,I do what I want and fearless
Just having some fun
I only break the rules, when it's the right thing to do
No one can stop me now
Cause a rebel's gotta do what a rebelโฒs gotta do
Donโฒt know what this'll bring, life changes like the seasons
Doing all the wrong things
For all the right reasons
Real tough on the outside, got a heart of gold and I try
Stand up for me,stand up to you
Gotta do what I gotta
Making new friends,along the way
But I get some trouble, and make some mistakes
Cause Iโฒm a rebel,I do what I want and fearless
Just having some fun
I only break the rules, when it's the right thing to do
No one can stop me now
Cause a rebelโฒs gotta do what a rebel's gotta do
Making new friends,along the way
But I get some trouble, and make some mistakes
Making new friends,along the way
But I get some trouble, and make some mistakes
Cause Iโฒm a rebel,I do what I want and fearless
Just having some fun
I only break the rules, when it's the right thing to do
No one can stop me now
Cause a rebel's gotta do what a rebelโฒs gotta do
A rebelโฒs gotta do yeah,heyyy
To pop star Katy Perry, "Rebel" is an anthem about breaking free from societal constraints and allowing oneself to live life boldly and on one's own terms. The singer -- who Perry embodies with her signature confident and playful energy -- is unapologetically herself, even when that means standing out or getting into trouble. While some may try to hold her back, the rebel insists on doing what feels right and fulfilling her own desires.
For country artist Kacey Musgraves, "Rebel" is a song about embracing the unknown and taking risks. The singer finds herself in uncharted territory, surrounded by new people and experiences that challenge her in unexpected ways. Although she makes mistakes along the way, she remains steadfast in her determination to live life to the fullest and pursue her dreams without hesitation. Musgraves infuses the lyrics with a sense of wanderlust and optimism, reflecting the open road and wide skies of her beloved Southwest.
To alternative rock band Paramore, "Rebel" is an urgent call to action for anyone who feels stifled or trapped by their circumstances. The singer is fed up with being told what to do and how to act, and decides to take matters into her own hands. Paramore's signature blend of punk rock energy and pop melody gives the lyrics a sense of rebellion and defiance, as the singer throws caution to the wind and lets herself be free.
