The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

It ain't no joke I'd like to buy the world a toke
and teach the world to sing in perfect harmony
and teach the world to snuff the fires and the liars
hey i know it's just a song but it's spice for the recipe
this is a love attack i know it went out but it's back
it's just like any fad it retracts before impact
if you got the goods they'll come and buy it just to stay in the clique
[CHORUS:]
So don't delay, act now supplies are running out
Allow, if your still alive, six to eight years to arrive
and if you follow there may be a tomorrow but if
the offer's shunned, you might as well be walkin' on the sun
Twenty five years ago they spoke out and they broke out
of recession and oppression and together they toked
and they folked out with guitars around a bonfire
just singin' and clappin' man what the hell happened
some were spell bound some were hell bound
some they fell down and some got back up and
fought against the melt down
and their kids are hippie chicks all hypocrites
because fashion is smashin' the true meaning of it
[CHORUS]
It ain't no joke when a mamma's handkerchief is soaked
with the tears because her baby's life has been revoked
the bond is broke up so choke up and focus on the close-up
Mr. Wizard can't perform no God-like hocus pocus
so don't sit back kick back and watch the world get bushwhacked
news at 10:00 your neighborhood is under attack
put away the crack before the crack puts you away
you need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate
[CHORUS]
In Smash Mouth's "Walkin' on the Sun," the band delivers a social commentary on the world's problems that we continue to ignore. The opening lines, "It ain't no joke, I'd like to buy the world a toke, and teach the world to sing in perfect harmony," suggest that the solution to global problems could be as simple as sharing a joint and harmonizing together. The following lyrics "and teach the world to snuff the fires and the liars, hey I know it's just a song but it's spice for the recipe" is a reference to the idea of snuffing out lies and misinformation that fuel conflicts and destruction.
The song's chorus, "So don't delay, act now supplies are running out, allow if you're still alive, six to eight years to arrive, and if you follow, there may be a tomorrow, but if the offer's shunned you might as well be walkin' on the sun," describes urgency for change and the need for action to create a better future. This is further emphasized in lines like "put away the crack before the crack puts you away, you need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate."
There is a passion behind the lyrics, with a call to action toward a brighter future. The song speaks to how society has turned its back on the ideals of the past, with the hippies mentioned in the second verse being a symbol of a countercultural mindset with strong beliefs. However, their legacy is now caricatured and reduced to looks and fads. The lyrics suggest that we need to go back to their spirit of fighting against oppression and making a difference.
