even a fish
warmer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i sent the message out into space
hoping that beings from another race
would hear the tales of a weaker man
and come and save us from ourselves again

what's this
this can't be happening
what have we done
look how far we've come

satisfactions at an all time low
like a pack of rodents away we go

even a fish
knows when to quit
swimming up a river
of it's own shit

what's this
this can't be happening
what have we done
look how far we've come
and my plans
with no fruit to bear
by your hand
you sign away my air

satisfactions at an all time low
like a pack of rodents away we go

even a fish
knows when to quit

swimming up a river
of it's own shit

Overall Meaning

The verse "I sent the message out into space, hoping that beings from another race would hear the tales of a weaker man and come and save us from ourselves again" suggests that the singer has lost hope in humanity and is looking to the possibility of extraterrestrial help. It conveys a sense of desperation and helplessness, as if the singer is pleading for someone, anyone else to come and rescue us from our own self-destructive tendencies. The following lines "what's this? This can't be happening. What have we done? Look how far we've come" evoke a sense of disbelief and shock at how far humanity has come in terms of technological advancements and at the same time how we have let ourselves down as a species. The lyrics "satisfactions at an all-time low, like a pack of rodents away we go" convey a sense of aimlessness and apathy, where we seem to be running mindlessly and yet getting nowhere.

The chorus "even a fish knows when to quit, swimming up a river of its own shit" suggests that even animals have better instincts than humans, who are drowning themselves in their own mess. It is a metaphor for the human condition, where we are too busy chasing material pleasures and ignoring our own self-destructive tendencies, leading to a state of hopelessness and despair.
