Joe great review! First time I see you wearing a jacket in one of your videos.

You totally hit it and I feel the same about your comments on the interior. It is a premium interior. My one zonk is the piano black trim, it’s awful sensitive and should only be carefully cleaned with a microfiber cloth and a swiffer duster. Mazda really needs to get rid of it!

As far as the touchscreen, that is my other zonk for not being touch enabled, especially in CarPlay mode as this user interface works best with touch screens. However, the rotary wheel and adjacent buttons are intuitive and once you memorize their location you can pretty much navigate through this thing smoothly.

As far as the info provided on the touch screen, I think it’s the right amount of info. I like that it’s minimal to only the things that matter and not overloaded.

But boy oh boy that Bose speaker system thumps and the drive feels like you’re floating on the road.

I like this refresh they did on this one. They went more aggressive and those wheels pretty sporty too even though this isn’t a performance suv. I believe sales will continue to be strong

@Alex Dragomir the turbo in this car isn’t worth the over 2500 premium over the base engine which has more than enough power for passing and everyday driving. Joe likes to do this “ on throttle” nonsense in sport mode all the time for entertainment. It’s clearly not the way people drive, and actually does a disservice to people looking for normal driving characteristics

Actually the front fascia on the previous years model look more aggressive and sportier. The headlights do look more aggressive the biggest drawback is that on the carbon edition they took out the BOSE sound system and the turbo engine. What a shame

After getting our CX30 Turbo, I can see why Mazda has such a cult following. The execution is just supreme - everything I want, not really anything I don’t, the fit and finish is great and the interior appointments are above the competition. The “older” drivetrain to me just means it’s that much more dialed-in and reliable.

You can almost feel the passion with which these cars are designed and assembled.

totally agreed. I have a CX30 2.5 GTX and it's absolutely amzing in reliability, I tested the new GLA and the plastic in the cabin sounds a lot when you press it (for example the vents) and the central part woobles a lot when you try to move it. At the other side, the X1 feels too basic and cheap. I saved some money in the car and also in the insurance monthly payment and the finish of the car is clearly aiming for luxury models.

I love the design of the Cx-5, the only two gripes about it is that it's somewhat small and two it needs a significant improvement with MPG. I know that's what the CX-50 is for but it'd be nice if CX5 could still offer that too.

Love my 2020 CX-5. I would definitely consider upgrading to a 2022 CX-5 or the new CX-50. Test drove a Rav 4 and there was no comparison. Couldn’t wait to get back to my Mazda. The Rav 4 seemed very stiff to me and not comfortable to drive. Will stick to Mazda.

I actually love the infotainment system as is, being touch-less. No unsightly buttons everywhere and no fingerprints. I think it adds to it's elegance. It took me just a few days to get used to the wheel. Not a zonk for me.

A lot of reviewers ding the “tablet stuck on the dash” look, but they don’t look like tablets, they look like something you use to enter your order at the Olive Garden. This actually looks like an iPad with no extra bulk or weird gimmicks to try to make it look integrated.

Having owned the 2019 Rav4, I can say that the Rav4 interior just feels cheap and plasticky. Also, it's not the most soundproof car, the wind noise are loud when you're driving on the freeway. Mazda on the other hand, you can really tell the effort their design team put into the design, from exterior to interior. I was able to test drive the 2022 CX5 last week and I was stunned by the quality and driving experience. The one thing Rav4 beat CX5 is the gas mileage.

It’ll be interesting once Toyota shares their hybrid tech with Mazda specifically in this CX-5 or the upcoming CX-50. It’ll be best of both worlds (drivability and fuel economy)! Not to mention the space in the CX-50 it’ll be like the best of CRV (practicality), RAV4 (reliability & fuel economy) & CX-5 (fit, finish & driving dynamics) all combined into one (CX-50)!

Hey Joe, great review! I've been waiting to see this new Mazda CX-5 for awhile and really glad they are starting to pop up. Just to note, I believe those front turn signals are new and LED as well, not the standard incandescent bulb it used to be, albeit its a little small though and maybe could've been integrated better but just thought I would point it out. Always appreciate a full led setup, can't stand the combination lighting on some of these cars it's just takes a lot away from the look and perceived quality and style IMO. Keep up the awesome work, thanks again for the videos!

I was going to get a 4runner, then I drove one of these. Really fun to drive by comparison. MUCH SMALLER, but also much better gas mileage. Still thinking it through, but I was impressed with this little SUV.

Won't lie, I'm going to miss the CX-3 in its original form. The CX-5 is definitely a good looking compact SUV. I'd say better styling than the current, boxier, angle lines RAV4. Though both should prove extremely reliable. I can see myself in either one as my next vehicle. I tend to keep my vehicles for over a decade. Both should age well in terms of styling and reliability.

I have a ‘17 CX5 Grand Sport with the optional package which included heads up, heated rear seats etc. A great SUV but it could use a little more power. Fun to drive, excellent ergonomics. I also have ‘20 Toyota RAV4 XSE Hybrid. Great on gas, nice room decent acceleration. But no memory seats, uninspiring ride and lots of wind noise. I would buy another CX5, in fact, I’m waiting for the total redo. The ‘22 is nice but basically the same as the 2017. Great videos! Love your content

Great car. I bought a 2020 basic model and it comes with a lot of safety features that the CRV and RAV4 did not offered in this price range. And the ride and handling are the best. I wanna see the upcoming CX 50.

Nice review as always. You didn't mention if the driver's seat is any more comfortable than before. What is your take? One of the reasons I didn't pull the trigger on it in the past is that I thought that thigh support and comfort was lacking in the driver's seat. Is Mazda's claim of improved seat comfort in the '22 marketing shtick or did you think there was real improvement. I await your kind reply. THANKS!

Just bought this 2022 model and the seats were a big selling point for me after back surgery. I can't speak to previous years but I can say they are the most comfortable and personally adjustable of any previous vehicle I've owned

@Kimberly Saunders We've had ours for 6 months and they've softened a bit but I still find it too firm. However, I have a lot of hip issues and it doesn't bother my wife at all. I much prefer the seats in our 2019 Mazda3 which has more thigh support as my legs are longer than my wife's.

On my 2021 CX-5 leather seats the seats/sides were really stiff…thankfully they have softened up and are much more comfortable now. Just takes time to break in.

Mazda mentioned modifying the comfort of the seating in their press release. Users on Reddit have reported them being 15-20% softer but good to check it out yourself. I always found the ones in our 2021 Turbo too firm for my preference but found the lower trims to be more acceptable.

I love my 2020 CX-5. I think it’s the sexiest car in its price point. This specific design started in 2017, that’s when they elongated the hood to go over the grill so it looks way sportier than the 2016 and previous CX-5 models. Mazda does the best job in balancing safety and aesthetics. I sure wish I could have updated lights and shiny black rims instead of my gray ones, but I can see myself driving this car for a long time and still being happy.
Also the fingerprints on the glossy trim on the inside issue is so real so I hope they change that in the future or at least throw in free towels standard 😅

The CX-5 puts the heated steering wheel components in that space. If it has a heated steering wheel, that space is filled in. This one doesn't have a heated wheel.

The VALUE of what you're getting in a CX-5 vs. a RAV-4 is a no brainer. My wife and I looked at both. We went with a 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition AWD (we bought it last year). The feel, the build quality, the reliability, the fun factor, the looks, the design thoughtfulness (both interior and exterior), the user friendly touches... when you get a higher trim level CX-5, it feels like you stole someone's Audi. Every single day when we get in our car, my wife can't stop saying "I love this car!!!" If we had gotten the RAV-4, not only would we have paid more money, we would have settled. Plasticky interior, wouldn't have gotten the color or trim level we wanted due to COVID supply chain issues, just no thanks.

Hey great review like always. Just wanted to let you know this Cx 5 is actually the s premium edition. The s preferred doesn't come with some of the goodies like the 19 inch wheels and bose system. Cx5 wasn't even on my radar until I seen them on your channel. Love my new car Thank you for that 👍

I bought a ‘21 CX-5 touring last February. This vehicle is SO much fun to drive. I test drove a Rav 4 before I took the CX-5. The rav engine to me had a loud whine to it which was noticeable inside. This one, is quiet inside. The CX-5 is so much fun to drive.

looks amazing! really clean, sculptural volume. nice white/matte black combo with a little of chrome. i love rear lights, way better than before (my biggest con on previous version), real exhaust tips, real HVAC, minimum of gloss black inside... shame about classic bulb parts of lights... NA-engine, real (no dual clutch BS) automatic, awd.... i cant stop... 😀

So glad i got a 2021 cx5 carbon edition turbo. Instead of waiting for a 2022. 2021 carbon edition looks so much more aggressive, not only does it look more aggressive it is since Mazda decided to take out the turbo engine. Another knock is they took out the BOSE sound system. What they should of done is kept it the way it was and added the adaptive LED headlights and LED taillights. That would of been a for sure home run

I just bought the 2022 cx5 carbon edition in February. I love it. Only negative that really discourage me is the the body roll. You take a turn in this car and it feels like it's gonna flip over. I wish I had test driven it before I bought it.

@Alison Casper Hi sorry for late reply. Yes, I would say it's reliable. I've done only scheduled maintenance, all oil changes and tire rotations at the 5,000 interval, sometimes a little before and sometimes after. I replaced the brakes and tires at around 37,000 miles, nyc roads are pretty harsh. So far, so good.

I drive a 2020 Escape SEL which has around the same MSRP and this CX5 blows it away hands down. Luckily, it's a company car so I don't own the Escape but if I had to choose a small SUV, the Mazda would be at the top of my list. Oh, there's no prettier color on a vehicle than Mazda's Soul Crystal Red.

I wanted to purchase the 2.5 turbo CX5. Having owned both the RAV4 and the Rogue I was ready to try a different MFG. I was almost sold until I saw the lack of touch screen. Kind of bummed as the turbo 2.5L V4, ride quality, fit and finish, audio system, wheels, and AWD made it almost a perfect crossover SUV in the price range I wanted. The search continues. Thanks for the review as it helped me make up my mind. My apologies for being such a techno snob. Flame on.

Being therapy owner of a 2019 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve (2.5 L. turbo, AWD) I think theX-5 is STILL the best compact SUV for the money for 90% of that market. You get SO much for your money, especially the high quality.
Hey, I had a 2007 RAV 4 V^ $WD and teh transfer case had to be replaced after 38,000 miles! Toyota generally has goo quality but not always.

I bought a 2018 CX-5 GT with the package for my first car. So happy I did. It’s aging well and is so reliable. Although its a few yrs old, I feel like I’m driving a newer car and it has a luxury feel. I’m loving it! Mazda did a great job with the CX-5s!

I love this channel. Your reviews are top notch 👌🏾. I'm in the market for a cross over/smaller SUV. I've always had muscle cars and currently own a '17 Chevy camaro. At 30, I'm just ready for a more "grown up" car. I'll come back to the muscle cars later in life. I'll probably be that 60+ year old cruising in my 2050 corvette 😂. But right now I'm missing those common sense amenities like heated mirrors, blindspot monitors, MORE SPACE, luxury seating and ride. However, I still want some power. Effortless merging onto the freeway, being able to pass on the freeway, andstill being able to drive defensively, but not in a muscle car. I think if money wasn't a factor, I'd buy a new bmw x4 m40i, but money is a factor lol. So, I'm looking for something in the 50k-55k range. Any suggestions?!

There is still so much to like about this vehicle, however, the severely aged ADAS and infotainment system in the year 2022 is too much to overcome. I have been interested in the CX-50 too but I keep coming back to the CX-5 because it looks so much better to me. The CX-50 has too much plastic trim all around the outside and I don't like the big emblem on the hood. I'm afraid it's going to be a be price jump too. My son is fine with the CX-5 size so I think this will be it for him.

The cx5 turbo has the fun driving I did not find in the Rav4. Definitely the best in its class

Joe, I love the reviews, but the preoccupation with sport mode has to go. Most people don’t drive that way They go from point A to B driving normally . The on throttle stuff is fun, but it’s not the way it is with drivers
Maybe you’ll use the sport to pass on the highway, but doubt it

I use the sport mode regularly to merge onto the highway. Really great for that. It's also useful in city driving when I need to be able to react more quickly to fast changes in traffic and not have to wait for a downshift.

I own a 2016 CX-5 (older design)...and after watching your review I would definitely buy it again. Rav4 is reliable but not stylish or smooth like Mazda. I'm in my late 40's as well and I love your references to classic junk food and retro action figures. too funny Joe! Keep up the good work.

Bought the Signature trim, minus Turbo engine. Super happy with the styling, as good as luxury SUV. And very smooth drive. Was driving Audi Q5 earlier and very pleased with what Mazda offers at a lower price range.

Very stylish car, but I still can’t decide which one would be better for me, Rav 4 or CX-5.
I know Toyota for very reliable and spacious cars, I know Mazda for fun and stylish cars. Cargo space definitely a lot bigger in RAV4 though.
No idea which one I like more :(

P.S. I drive the 2021 CX-5 Signature edition and my wife owns a RAV4 Hybrid, so I have plenty of experience with both vehicles. You said it: for practicality and fuel efficiency: RAV4 Hybrid (I wouldn’t even bother with the regular gasoline version). For stylish design both inside and out, and fun (for an SUV) driving dynamics: CX-5, particularly the turbo editions. Both cars have good reliability overall.

If for example you have a wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs and do a lot of cruising around town then the RAV4 hybrid is the more sensible choice. If it’s just you, or perhaps you and your partner with just the one dog or child and you do a lot of driving on winding back roads and highways, then lease the turbo Mazda for 3-4 years - you won’t regret it.

They don't fold completely flat, but very close to flat. Good enough for me, but check it for yourself to see how you like it.

I'm still driving my Mazda 2012 cx-7 turbo 2.2 diesel revolution Top. yup it's fun to drive, With normal regular maintenance i have 0 problems, yet i don't feel like it's getting old! This is exactly what I love about Mazda👍🏻

I have the 2020 CX-5 signature and love driving it. It's so much fun. I do wish the mpg's were better and of course the touch info but you get used to it. Zoom Zoom.

Aside from they stylish look and design. The CX5s and CX9s are very reliable. I have a 2016 CX9, 70k miles. I only paid for the maintenance like oil change, my wife's 2018, 41K miles CX5 same thing. We have a 2019 BMW X5 for special purposes, they say its fun to drive and I would say Mazda's are in the same level.

Joe you mentioned the turbo is available on higher trims, I believe Mazda up'd the HP to 256 on premium for 2022.

Kinda disappointed in this redesign, they got rid of fog lights on all trims, and really no interior changes at all. We need a touch screen, and more other updates, longer arm rest for center console would be nice.

I had one as a rental nice vehicle but totally gutless engine. The following week had the turbo version in the CX-30 which was a hoot to drive but too small for me at 6 foot my head hit the bump for the sunroof all the time!!!

@Colin Goldthorpe I love Joe and Lori Raiti too. Great couple and great team. And I agree I had a blast driving the turbo CX-30 with AWD before I selected my CX-5 non turbo. I’ll probably get a turbo next time for the extra punch but I don’t feel regret about my naturally aspirated engine.

@Kody I've watched Raiti's ride for years. I watch every video he releases to support his channel whether its a car i would buy or not. He's the one Youtuber that still comments back to your replies and has great content. The turbo model i had was a CX-30 model it was way faster than the non turbo CX-5 version. I own Three different Mini Coopers non turbo and turbo 2wd and AWD versions. And the turbo versions are way more fun to drive.

Be careful with that paint it was prone to chipping.I ended up going with Machine Metal Gray with my 2018 CX-5GT. I've since gotten rid of it for being too old. This car is in desperate need of a redesign. It's going for Dodge Challenger/Charger old. Nissan GTR old.

I like the vehicle but, the front turn signals are barely visible. The ruby red color on some CX-5's I've seen is fabulous! Can't wait to see the CX-50 in a few months.

I have a 2018 CX5 GT and will get another one if I were in the market for another gasoline powered SUV. But if I choose a hybrid SUV, then it will be a RAV4. I have owned Toyota, Honda and Mazda for years and they are all reliable if you maintain them properly. As a matter of fact I would say Mazda is slightly ahead of Honda when it comes to reliability, and Toyota is the #1.

The RAV4 has a huge advantage in that it has a hybrid configuration, which will save a lot of money down the road. Mazda is a smaller car company, and could have serious problems in the electrification process due to lack of R&D money.

I went to the Markham Mazda dealer during the summer because at that time my mom planned to buy a CX-5, but we didn't bought it, but when I sat into the Mazda CX-5 in the showroom, it is comfortable. But I still think my father's 2021 silver Lexus RX350 is much comfortable than a Mazda CX5

I have a 2012 Mazda 3 which I absolutely LOVE still to this day because she still looks great, drives amazing and has close to 180k miles and going, going. I have been looking at Rav4's and do love the look, wanted a hybrid can't get me hands on one, so I haven't been able to drive one, but after watching your review, I may just stick with a Mazda CX-5, the fact that it drives so smoothly has always been a big factor for me and the kick it gives you when you need to accelerate when you need it is a big one for me. Only issue is how my husband is going to take it, he's been working so HARD trying to get me that RAV4 talking to multiple dealerships 🤦🏽‍♀️😬🤷🏻‍♀️ thanks for the great reviews I've been watching them on the different cars I've been wanting. I also like how they extended the window in the front towards the side mirrors, you don't have such a big blind spot now. Thanks again

So little leg room and the front feels claustrophobic. I really wanted to buy it. Still on the fence between Rav4 Prime and Forester.

This car is plenty fast for me I can easily go 70 to 90 over the pass when I want to. No need for a
turbo. If I want to go really fast I have the BMW motorcycle. This car will last me till an affordable electric car comes along.

I wish they kept front wheel drive option, as far as I remember awd is under powered , the rpm hitting 3K all the time in city, you can use sports mode, but mpg will be different.

Diehard Toyota/Lexus fan here…but the CX5 blows the RAV out of the water and competes head to head with the Lexus NX. Drive them and compare. Cancelled my NX order and got the Signature/turbo CX5….loving it! Unbelievably fun to drive! Zoom zoom…

Actually, the headlights has remnants of the Ford Mustang because Ford still has stake in Mazda. Most times, when driving at night, I assume a Mustang is coming up behind, but 9/10 its a Mazda because they have same front end with the running lights, similar to the Mustang.
