Oh god I'm so glad I stook upon your channel.
Usually I overlook characters like Caitlyn but she left an inprint on my heart. I've been thinking why when I reailized: Caitlyn is inspiring.
Let me explain my self. Most of the Arcane characters are traumatized, including Vi. But Cait has good parents who love her so she grew up as a stong (physically and spiritually) woman.
But she does not abuse her powers. She improves her skills, sharpens her mind, she works hard to gain her independence and do what she thinks is right.
She has her conflicts and struggles, but she takes care of herself, so she has the power to take care of others. She is wise enough to understand Vi's struggles, her coping mechanisms. She is not naive, more like inexpireinced about the world outside Piltower/her home, but is willing to learn.
I think of Vander and how he never scolted Vi but was talking to her, was making sure Vi felt understood, not alone. And here we have Caitlyn who may be pissed by Vi's actions (like when Vi was eating), but when a situation is seriously dangerous/threataning, is compassionate. She listens to Vi, learns from her and gives her comfort. I think Vi acnolages Cait's good intentions and true nature (I mean Cait is TERRIBLE at lying) and feels that 'comforting vibes' she felt near her mother or Vander.

Caitlyn IS sweet. She uses her strength to protect and comfort. She's shooting for saving live and making peace - even if it means to give up your special gun to save a reckless girl from the Undersity.

I'm afraid we will see Caitlyn hardened in season 2. But I hope Vi will be there for her. They will be there for each other. Because they are both caring and value their familys.

Thank you, Tilda Owen. I love and respect your analysises. Can't wait to see more from you.

@rotwang2000

The cupcake scene is one of those layered things Arcane is so good at. It's not just Vi flirting with Caitlyn and probing about her sexuality, it's about Vi showing Caitlyn her world and immersing her in it. "See, enforcer, this is the world you had not clue about." But the next Cupcake scene is a deep contrast. Vi is vulnerable and needs help getting up. She is on her knees in front of an enforcer, all her superiority in navigating Zaun, feeling comfortable inside a city she hasn't been in years, despite all the changes Silco caused and seeing Caitlyn struggle to do so, is gone and Caitlyn comes into her own and helps a vulnerable Vi back on her feet and then does everything to save Vi. Caitlyn doesn't even hesitate to save Vi and navigate Zaun on her own.

A lot of work went into creating two characters that are both contrasts and have many overlaps. Caitlyn is taller with a different body language while Vi is shorter and jacked, but Caitlyn is quite toned herself, they couldn't have a different upbringing but then realize they do share a specific way to see the world. Vi goes for personal up and close punching, while Caitlin uses a rifle to fight at a distances, but they represent a need to grow beyond throwing a punch or stay at a distance and use a rfile so Caitlyn gives away her rifle. Vander was Vi's caring, but flawed father figure, where Caitlyn had a strong mother and very caring father, reversing the usual roles, her mother showing up with a rifle and her father asking about injuries.

And once again Arcane raises the bar with the dinner scene where now the roles are reversed and it's up to Vi to save Powder AND Caitlyn. She can't use her fists to solve this problem so she's in Caitlyn's shoes now, learn to use what she learned from Caitlyn to save Powder.

It's amazing how you can keep finding interesting bits in Arcane like Vander who is a good man who makes terrible mistakes and Silco who is a horrible man who ends up doing some good, but both end up as failures. Vander failed Vi and Silco failed Powder, but Vander finds atonement and gives Vi the strength to carry on, and Silco gives the world the finger, destroys Powder and turns her into Jinx.

The real secret of Arcane is that the characters all act according to their own logic and not according to the demands of a script.

@tildaowen

Again, wow, I love your astute comments, I really want to return the favour, but I will do it a little at a time (don't have much of time at the moment). The first thing that I wanted to comment on is the last thing you mention here: how long time has gone by. This is in a sense not really important, because what matters is what happens to them and how they react to it and to each other. Time is irrelevant when you're going through traumatic and exciting events.
On the other hand, it is relevant because how can two people form such a deep attachment in such a short time? When I was researching my first video, I looked into it, and here's what I came up with (premise: the actions and events occuring in both Piltover and the undercity happen chronologically as we are shown them):
DAY 1, episode 4 +5: Caitlyn arrives at Stillwater late at night, she arranges to free Vi from prison (do they sleep at night? we don't know, depends at what ungodly hour, Caitlyn visits the prison...)
DAY 2, episode 5: the next time we see them, it is broad daylight. We see them parkour, have lunch, visit "The Last Drop", etc. While this is happening, we see the concert in Piltover, which I assume is in the evening. So the brothel scene and the fight with Sevika is late at night.
DAY 3, episode 6: They escape to the hideout/Vi's old place in the dark of night or early morning. Vi sleeps (or is passed out), and (later?) Caitlyn ventures out to get a potion. Parallel events: We see the morning after for Mel and Jayce, Jinx is at the bar, which is empty so it's during the day. When the council ousts Heimerdinger, the light looks like it's close to sundown, and when Jinx lights the flare we see a dark sky and stars above her.
DAY 4, episode 7: Vi and Caitlyn wake up the next morning in chains and go out into bright sunlight with Ekko. At night they go to the bridge where they have the showdown with Jinx.
DAY 5, episode 8: When they sneak into Caitlyn's bedroom the sun's just coming up, pink skies and long shadows on the bed. In the evening they go to the council, the scene in the rain is definitely at night.
DAY 6, episode 8-9: I'm assuming Caitlyn's shower is in the morning, because why would she shower twice in a day (she had cleaned up between being in bed with Vi and standing before the council)? Also, I think Vi and Jayce, even though they were reacting quickly, had to do a little preparing before hitting the shimmer factory... Mel meets her mother in the light of day, long shadows are cast when Viktor says goodbye to Sky's ashes, and the sun is going down when Silco meets with Jayce. Vi's fight with Sevika and Jinx's Tea Party take place in the evening and night on the sixth day.
Apart from the last two episodes, each episode basically spans a day. So I stand by them knowing each other 4-5 days (because they meet so late at night on the first day) :-)

@@tildaowen I had the same reaction to Caitlyn's "What about us?" I was surprised, but I didn't question it and thought it was brave (even if I wasn't sure she fully considered what she meant herself when she asked it). They had obviously shared a meaningful moment of genuine connection just based on what we were allowed to see. It didn't even occur to me on my own that her words might refer to something significant that had happened offscreen.

I have a lot of things to say about the way time is handled in the show (especially with regards to the above), and Vi's reasons for bailing on Caitlyn, but I'm trying to hold back and not keep giving you more to respond to!

However...

"it's very funny and also quite sad how much time I've spent on them πŸ˜‚"

I know exactly what you mean! It's more than a little embarrassing...

@psgamer-0199

I know this video is about Vi and yet here I find myself falling for Caitlyn still.
Your analysis is wonderful. Thoughtful, intelligent, and I love how you expose the feelings and emotions behind the characters interactions and actions.
Nothing about Vi and Caitlyn developing feelings for each other felt rushed to me and you explained more than well why. Because they're not rushed at all. Both girls have their development, their personalities and character and their feelings developed in time accordingly.
I've seen couples on tv complementing each other before. But Caitlyn and Vi, just like Arcane as a whole, are something else entirely.
Arcane is a tragedy but with Caitlyn and Vi we can see some of that light at the end of the tunnel.
I caught on how the Cupcake nickname was probably used to taunt Caitlyn at the beginning, and I love so much that Caitlyn grows fond of that nickname as Vi starts using it as a term of endearment. Because it's true, Cait is sweet like a cupcake❀ And Vi now knows it.
Also I noticed how the moment Caitlyn talks to Ekko about helping everyone in Zaun is definitely the moment Vi sees the full picture of what kind of person Caitlyn is and realizes she's fallen in love with this girl. Caitlyn's words in that scene took me by surprise too. And as much as the words "Vi has a good heart" are heard a couple of times throughout Arcane, to me Caitlyn has the biggest, softest, purest heart I've seen.
Caitlyn is a character that surprised me as much as she surprised Vi. For years and years I get convinced the world sucks, people suck, that nothings gonna change and that nobody cares. And here is Caitlyn risking it all to HELP and SAVE people. To HEAL. She definitely blew me away with her values. She is incredible.
I just find your video and if you have more analysis on Vi and Caitlyn like this one I'll sure check your channel. I know I'd love to watch a video like this one from Caitlyn's perspective.
Beautiful, beautiful videoβœ¨πŸ‘

@darthcygnus7692

Sorry for being late to reply! A very good done analysis, and beautiful! It's perfect,
catches every detail of our lovely couple. Your explanation about the cupcake meanings it's
so on point: i never thought about it but it makes complete sense.
One thing i always thinks is how Vi and Cait felt alone in different ways: for Vi was the
loneliness that brings responsibility. She felt alone being the older sister to raise and
protect Powder, she felt alone when she was the leader of the gang. Then came the total
loneliness of imprisonment: severed from the world, lost everything in a single night, i
can't even begin to think at how horrible and devastating this was for her.
Sorry for the long comment, but your video is food for thoughts!
Bear with me, i don't like going around "shilling" myself, but there's a couple of things in
your analysis that i wrote and would like to share.

I wrote a fanfiction about Vi's prison years, so i can say a couple of things i imagined
happened in Stilwater that you mentioned in your analysis. just my headcanon!
She made some aquantainces in prison, at least one friendly, as the word friendly can be
applied to someone known in prison: there is no trust basically, everyone can count only on
themselves. In my case are two tattoists/mercenaries women, a shuriman and a freljordian that teaches Vi tattoing and then helps her for arms and back tattos, that Vi designed herself. She even end up working with them, developing a more deep friendship.And yes, good thing you noticed something that many overlook: it's a mixed prison, where women that cannot defend themselves are victims of men. Vi of course will never be one of them: she will end up being their bane actually!
But she gets abused a lot by guards: the worst part is that if she defend against guards she
gets trhown in solitary, and it's a nightmare in Stilwater. So she ends up not even trying to
react against guards beatings.
In my fic she is fourteen when Marcus buries her in prison: her first years she gets beaten a
lot by both guards and some inmates. Things changes when she is sixteen and she grow up
phisically becoming stronger, more skilled in fighting, someone to not mess with.

Caitlyn loneliness comes from the constant interference of her parents and Piltover's high
society behaviours. To better explaining myself i'll quote what she says to Vi in a
conversation from a fic i wrote (sorry, but it's really better than anything i can comment):
- "Everything i got were the fake friendships of the rich and powerful, the insincere
flattering of people who aimed to enter my parents grace using me as mere mean, as if i was
just a fucking object, non a person!" she shouts, her voice broken, angry as Vi never seen
her! Cait is unburdening a lot of repressed grief and she needs to let it all out, so she
wait patiently, even if all she wants is to reassure her lover instantly "And in the Force!
My colleagues just keep laughing behind my back, no one takes me seriously: they just
tolerate me because i am a fucking Kiramman! I despise my family's name with all my heart, it
has never done nothing good for me!" "Jayce was a friend, of course, but even with him i was
never sure if he just wanted to please my parents who financed his research: that's the level
of paranoia i constantly lived, live in! Grayson was the only one who understood and accepted
me as i am, who treated me as a person, respecting my choices and encouraging me: when i lost her i was alone again." "You're not alone anymore, my love! I'm here with you, for you: forever!" Vi cups her cheeks, staring deep in Cait's eyes, reaching to her soul. Cait wipes
her tears and manage to put a smile on "I know, Vi: you are the truest person i've ever met." -

I hope i wasn't annoying, as i said i don't like to go around saying "i wrote this, i wrote that!" It was just a way to express better my thoughts :) Anyway, again, great analysis!

@@tildaowen I really hope their relationship gets more of a focus in season 2. Not necessarily all romance but how they will work together to solve events that will be unfolding moving forward.

The thing Caitlyn says in the trailer:
β€œNo matter the way I slice it, if I go after your sister alone (?)”
+ β€œOne of us comes back in a box”
( she means dead ).
Vi proceeds to say: β€œI can do this myself, no one else needs to get hurt.”

Feels like this conversation doesn’t have much context. However Jinx quotes β€œI’m glad it’s you, it had to be you” gives me the idea that Vi is the one who went there.

Now that a similar situation to the end of S1 may unfold yet again, Vi goes to Jinx and Caitlyn is involved in some way.

Unrelated but It makes me a bit less worried about the end of season 1 completely severing their relationship, considering they are talking to each other ( even if it’s a very serious conversation ).

Vi seems to constantly speak as if everything is her fault and she has to go alone because
β€œnobody else needs to get hurt”.

I definitely think Vi is going to be blaming herself a lot moving forward, whilst having Caitlyn to pick her up. Which in terms is going to make their relationship more important in season 2.

+ If Riot doesn’t let them kiss in S2 then I will start an actual riot.

Ha ha ha, right! Case and point, very short video!

Caitlyn doesn't have a personality. She's a little naive. She likes her because she's clean... and hot.

@tildaowen

@@williampearson6299 Well, being naive and inexperienced is part of her personality... "doesn't have a personality"... I couldn't disagree more! There's so much I could say about her (and have done in my videos), but I'll spare you from the rant! πŸ˜‰

@williampearson6299

@@tildaowen Anybody can be naive about certain situations. It's not a personality trait. A very nuanced veteran can be naive on specific points that he/ she isn't an expert or willfully ignores because its not their concern.

Jinx also has a voice line "Vi stand for stupid" and that after Arcane have much more sense 😒
