Dancy's Dream
Restless Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dancy was a deacon
Every Sunday found him there
At the Lighthouse Gospel Church
With his hands folded in prayer

And standin' right beside him
Was his pretty hometown bride
But no one could have guessed
What he was prayin' deep inside

Dancy has a demon
Livin' somewhere in his past
That dark-haired Cajun angel
Was the devil dressed in black

Was it really voodoo
Or just weakness in the man?
The only time he ever fell
Was when she took his hand

Oh, it's been so long, but it's still so strong
Every night the devil comes and walks through Dancy's dream
She takes him by the hand and leads him back to New Orleans
A good man's goin' crazy somewhere in between
The hymns on Sunday mornin' and the sins in Dancy's dream

Sometimes it's almost like
He was never even there
But other times he swears, he smells
The flowers in her hair

He never told his secret
No one would understand
She's the only one who's seen
The dark side of the man

Oh, it's been so long, but it's still so strong
Every night the devil comes and walks through Dancy's dream
She takes him by the hand and leads him back to New Orleans
A good man's goin' crazy somewhere in between
The hymns on Sunday mornin' and the sins in Dancy's dream

Oh, it's been so long, but it's still so strong
Every night the devil comes and walks through Dancy's dream
She takes him by the hand and leads him back to New Orleans
A good man's goin' crazy somewhere in between
The hymns on Sunday mornin' and the sins in Dancy's dream

Oh, the sins in Dancy's dream

Overall Meaning

The song "Dancy's Dream" by Restless Heart is a touching and sorrowful tale of a man named Dancy who appears to be a devoted deacon every Sunday at his local church. Every week, he is present with his wife by his side, praying with his hands folded. However, it soon becomes apparent that Dancy is hiding a dark secret from everyone around him. He has a past that he cannot escape from, and the woman who once brought him happiness but who is now the source of his misery still haunts him.

The woman is described as a "dark-haired Cajun angel" who is the "devil dressed in black." Dancy's demon is living somewhere in his past, and he is not powerful enough to resist her pull. The song suggests that Dancy's past relationship with this woman may have involved voodoo, or perhaps it was just his weakness as a man. Regardless of the cause, Dancy falls every time she takes his hand. He is living in torment, unable to forget the love he once had and the pain that came with it.

It is a poignant song that describes the challenges of living with a painful past that never seems to go away. Even though Dancy is a good man who goes to church regularly, he is struggling to stay sane between the hymns on Sunday morning and the sins that consume him in his dreams. The song ends with the haunting lyrics "Oh, the sins in Dancy's dream." It is a tragic tale that many people can relate to in some way or another, making it a timeless classic.

This is without a doubt the greatest 🙌 vocal band that has ever graced country music. Their harmonies are almost other wordly, and I personally believe they are the only band that can compare to The Eagles. The dynamics of lead vocalist (Larry Stewart) and the background vocals of bassist (Paul Gregg) are very reminiscent of Don Henley and Glen Fry.

@morrigankasa570

Alabama is great as well so maybe a tie between them.

@tonysexton8207

I agree ....When they first appeared on the scene they were instantly compared to the Eagles
