The MGs), with Lester Snell on keyboards. Cropper also co-produced the album with Sebastian, with Steve Greenwell mixing. The album was recorded on analogue tape live in the studio. Ardent Studios sound engineer Curry Weber explained the reason for this on AllMemphisMusic, an online Memphis radio station:
Going to tape is just such a richer and warmer tone when you hit it first of all. Not a lot of guys these days are talented enough to go to tape, cause it’s so definitive and destructive. When you’re on tape, it’s on tape, and it's really hard to go in and fix a bunch of stuff like you can with computer these days. But just having all those guys out there on the floor. You know those guys are amazing musicians, so going to tape was easy for them. And that was just such a great experience to see all that talent out there, and it going straight to tape and it stuck, and everything was brilliant.
Steve Cropper on The Memphis Album
Steve Cropper, 4 times American Hall of Fame inductee (Rock and Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Songwriters and Musicians) and co writer of some of the songs featured on the album spoke about recording with Sebastian, "This kid came into Memphis, TN and just blew everybody’s socks off.......He just took us by storm, and it was like every song we did, we just looked at each other and like all said, "We can’t believe this kid can sing this good"
The Memphis Album is Sebastian's fourth album which was released on 10 November 2007 in Australia by Sony BMG debuting at #3 on the Aria charts, and became the 7th highest selling Australian album for 2007, achieving double platinum accreditation within 10 weeks of release.
The album received a nomination for Highest Selling Album at the 2008 ARIA Awards, finishing 3rd.
Critial Reception
The Memphis Album received many favourable reviews.
Bryan Patterson from Herald Sun stated that the album was "a ripper". He approved Sebastian's effort on a number of songs, stating "Take Me to the River" as the best song. Patterson commended Sebastian's collaboration with the original artists, while adding his own musical style; "Sebastian nails the tunes. He's respectful yet unafraid to inject them with a joyous individuality".
Jolleh Abshar from news.com.au regards The Memphis Album as Sebastian's "best album to date". Abshar commends Sebastian's risk to record a full album of soul classics, and also commented that "the style suits not only his voice, but also his persona".
