It was released on 18 March 2016, almost 10 years after her second album "The Sweet Escape", released in December 2006. The album received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans and features Fetty Wap on the track "Asking 4 It."
Gwen Stefani considers the new album to be "a breakup record". In a radio interview, she revealed: "It just makes me believe in God and my journey. My cross to bear was to go through these heartbreaks and write these songs and help people."
The first single "Used to Love You" was released on 20 October 2015 and was critically acclaimed. It was released along with a music video of Gwen Stefani staring directly into the camera as she fights to hold back her tears and struggles to deal with her broken heart.
The second single "Make Me Like You" was released on 12 February 2016 as a "Valentine's Day present" to her fans. On 16 February, Gwen Stefani collaborated with Target and shot a music video on live television. The elaborate performance aired during a commercial break of the Grammy Awards.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Gwen Stefani said: "What's so crazy is that sometimes tragedy, if you really absorb it, you can turn it into something beautiful. And this whole album is really about just trying to take something that was awful, and just, I don't know, healing from it and then turning it into something beautiful." Asked by Jimmy Kimmel if the song is about Blake Shelton, she said: "It is, actually. I will admit that that song is about that guy, yeah".
