Born David Debrandon Brown, Lucky Daye is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in a cult that forbade secular music, he nonetheless discovered an innate knack for singing. After his mother left the cult, Brown immersed himself in classic R&B and eventually fell particularly hard for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Rick James. Uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, he moved to Tyler, Texas, but soon relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music. He established himself as a songwriter and background vocalist, and across 2008 and 2009, landed credits on material by Keith Sweat (a handful of cuts on Just Me) and Ne-Yo ("She Got Her Own"). Brown wasn't as active the next few years — he did write for Boyz II Men ("Believe Us") — though he shifted gear during the latter half of the 2010s. During 2016 and 2017, he co-wrote songs released by Keke Palmer ("Enemiez"), Ella Mai ("10,000 Hours," "Down"), Trey Songz ("Song Goes Off"), and Mary J. Blige (including two tracks off Strength of a Woman), among other contemporary R&B artists. Signed as a recording artist to the RCA-supported Keep Cool label, Brown — by then living in Los Angeles — made his debut as Lucky Daye in 2018. First was "Little More Time," a Victoria Monet collaboration included on the soundtrack for Insecure's third season. Next came the single "Roll Some Mo," followed shortly thereafter by I, the song's parent EP. These six cuts, all written with and produced by D'Mile, prompted comparisons to Frank Ocean but also fell somewhere between comparatively soul-rooted progressives BJ the Chicago Kid and Daniel Caesar. ~ Andy Kellman

She got me out my ways
I eat on, put it on my plate
Honey, you be up to the same shame, same old
Can you speak up tomorrow?
I wake you up for talk
Baby, you're the wave
Maybe you're the way, you're divine
Better like wine in the nighttime, a perfect design
And where you go, I wanna go down deeper into your shine
Oh, I, can we hope high?
We running out of time, ooh
You better speak now, speak now
Pretty white dress
How'd he get between us?
And I know nobody knows, yeah
Pretty white dress
Hope nobody see us
'Fore you get home
Candy drip, IV
In me, I daydream
Can't breathe if it ain't me
Told you it can't be
All I know is don't leave
Can't breathe, oh, it ain't me
(Oh, no-no, no-no-no, baby)
We ride expensive highs
We tried to end it twice, yeah
Maybe you're the one, maybe you're the one
You're divine
Better like wine in the nighttime, a perfect design
And where you go, I wanna go down deeper into your shine (oh)
Oh, I, can we hope high?
We running out of time (oh)
You better speak now, speak now
Pretty white dress
How'd he get between us?
And I know nobody knows, yeah
Pretty white dress
Hope nobody see us
'Fore you get home
Pretty white dress
How'd he get between us?
Pretty white dress
Hope nobody sees us
Candy drip IV
In me, I daydream
Can't breathe if it ain't me
(If it ain't, if it ain't me)
Told you it can't be (be)
All I know is don't leave
Can't breathe, oh, it ain't me
We tried to end it twice
The lyrics to Lucky Daye's song "Candy Drip" seem to revolve around a passionate, potentially forbidden love affair. The singer is captivated by their partner, who seems to possess an irresistible allure ("Honey, you be up to the same shame, same old"). The singer acknowledges that they can't keep up with the intensity of the relationship but can't resist indulging in the passion ("I eat on, put it on my plate"). The partner is described as a captivating force ("Maybe you're the wave, maybe you're the way, you're divine").
The lyrics also highlight the secrecy and the desire to escape societal judgment ("Pretty white dress, how'd he get between us?"). The reference to a dress suggests that the partner may be in a committed relationship with someone else, adding a layer of forbidden love and the fear of discovery. The singer expresses a sense of urgency and the need for their partner to speak up or take action ("You better speak now, speak now").
The chorus speaks to the addictive and intoxicating nature of the relationship, comparing it to a "candy drip IV" that the singer daydreams about. The opening line "We ride expensive highs" could refer to the emotional highs and lows of the relationship, suggesting they have gone through challenges but can't seem to break away from each other ("We tried to end it twice, yeah").
Overall, "Candy Drip" explores the complexities of a passionate but potentially forbidden love affair, capturing the desire, the secrecy, and the addictive nature of the relationship.
