Apart from Jay as the founding member, Shmolts is an online avatar of revolving musicians for the time being. Shmolts is a personal project, but it can also be a collaboration with other songwriters as well.
Jay's main aim for Shmolts is to create tunes influenced by the melody and lyrics of The Beatles and Bob Dylan, the darkness of Tool and Black Sabbath and the bombast of GnR and Led Zeppelin.
To date, Shmolts has released Evil Eye, Point Of View and The Grand Wizard. Jay plans to release Weatherman and this song will be a dedication to the underdog.
Further releases planned are Magick, Blow and Not Fair But Lovely.
Why the odd name? The first music video that Jay saw was 'Let There Be Rock' by AC/DC where the late Bon Scott sings the lyrics
'The white man had the Schmaltz (Shmolts),
The black man had the blues'
Being raised a Catholic, Jay's mother immediately switched the channel when she saw Angus Young prancing around with an electric guitar in an alter boy's dress. Deeming it inappropriate viewing for a child obviously. But the visual and the lyrics stuck with Jay.
Jay Serrao's background - Born and raised in Kuwait, Jay went travelling for 2.5 years before eventually landing in England. In his life and travels, he was exposed to some thought provoking music of The Clash before embarking on a journey of discovering the music of Led Zeppelin, Delta Blues, The Beatles, Sabbath and Bob Dylan to name a few. He made music and toured with Jay Serrao and The Juice (aka The Juice) for 8 years before starting the online concept of Shmolts.
Shmolts is online because, Jay intends to build a fan base first before going on tours and doing gigs.
