Born on the 24th October 1946 in Athens, Greece, her family was originally from Naxos. Although she started by studying classical dance, she became interested in singing at the age of seventeen. She was initially discovered through appearing in a radio talent contest in 1964, which happened to be heard by Γιάννης Σπανός {Yannis Spanos}, who was visiting from France in search of voices for a neww approach to song that he called the New Wave. Chomata became one of its most prominent performers.
Among other things, Spanos gave her the song «Μια αγάπη για το καλοκαίρι» ("One Love for the Summer"), which she sang in the 1970 film Σκιές στην άμμο ("Shadows on the Sand"). She has sung over two hundred songs and released eighteen albums, and has worked with composers such as Νίκος Δανίκας, Βασίλης Κουµπής, Γιώργος Κριµιζάκης, Χρήστος Λεοντής, Νίκος Μαµαγκάκης, Ηλέκτρα Παπακώστα, Μάνος Χατζιδάκις, Μίκης Θεοδωράκης, and Σταύρος Ξαρχάκος.
Chomata struggled with cancer for thirty years, but died in hospital on the 24th October 2010 after an accident.
