He studied composition at the Tōkyō University of Fine Arts before entering the world of music.
He is best known for his score to the 1984 Tōhō film ゴジラ (Gojira, also known as The Return of Godzilla) and his rich scores for NHK Taiga Dramas 秀吉 (Hideyoshi, 1996) and 功名が辻 (Kōmyō ga Tsuji, 2006).
In addition to that he scored several animated movies and OVAs and also composed the music to the popular video games series 決戦 (Kessen) for PlayStation 2.
He is married to singer / actress Baishō Chieko (倍賞千恵子, Chieko Baishō).
