Years Active: 1994 - Present
Kuricorder Quartet is a poly-instrumental band whose four members perform mainly on the recorder. The name Kuricorder is a combination of the word "kuri" (chestnut) and recorder. Kuricorder Quartet was loosely formed in the summer of 1994 when the four members, none of whom specialized in the recorder at that time, came together to back up former Tama member Toshiaku Chiku. They stuck together after the gig, and worked the live house circuit for several years before releasing their first album in 1997. Since that time they have released a number of original and best of albums, as well as a live DVD commemorating their tenth anniversary. In addition to their own records, Kuricorder Quartet has done extensive work on movie and television soundtracks, music compilations, and television commercials. They have collaborated with numerous artists including television personality and rakugo comedian Shota Shunputei, folksinger Morio Agata, musicians Minoru Yoshizawa, Chemistry, the multi-disciplined Naoto Takenaka, and many others. In 2008, Kuricorder Quartet recorded the song "PoPo Loouise" with Ua for the NHK television program Minna no uta. The band's music varies greatly, from medieval-style chamber music to modern ambient-influenced sounds, to a brilliant version of the "Imperial March" from Star Wars on melodica, drum, ukelele, and tuba, but the band members' laid back personalities and serious musical chops remain a constant.
