"Bad Buka takes Balkan and American east and west roots music and joins with it a punk rock. When asked what was the spark that brought Bad Buka together, Slavko Bosnjak, the lead singer first jokes "half a litter of Slivovitz." But then notes that brother-in-law, he, and lead guitarist Christofer Lovrin needed to find a way to communicate, as he didn't speak much English." Chris adds, "And I didn't speak much Croatian." The mutual love of world-folk, and rock music was the beginning of a long musical partnership. Bad Buka literally translates to bad noise. The name alludes to the crossing of the east and west and the fun that is at the core of their sound. If it's "bad noise" it's the best sounding noise you'll ever hear. Consciously intended to project the joy of life, love, and freedom of the human spirit Bad Buka makes each performance a party to remember.
Family is at the center of Bad Buka as four of the eight members are related Chris' two sisters are in the band, vocalist Lady D (Diana) and vocalist Carla T, Slavko's wife. But for Chris who stayed in the U.S., the entire Lovrin clan went to live in Croatia in the late '90s, on their return brought Slavko with them. The four band members regard the others in the band as part of the family as well, guitarist/trumpeter Cooper Gorrie, bassist Benjamin Backus, drummer Charlie Schmid, trumpeter John Carlson, and the latest addition percussionist and harmonica player John "Sully" Sullivan.
