Formerly of aggressive improvisational rock band Superzapper Recharge, his debut solo album, I stay up late to throw rocks at the early bird, released December 28th, 2010.
His live sets usually consist of building ambiance utilizing a tape delay system that naturally decays the loop. Due to the clumsy nature of this, performances are most often improvised. Prone to mood swings, the music tends to jump from something quiet and lush to abrasive noise tangents.
William's first recording project was a comedy rock demo with Josh Burke under the name Lord Xenu & the Thetans. The music was heavy metal oriented and had lyrical themes mocking certain beliefs of Scientology (inaccurately). After this, he started a shoegaze band called Rain Mirror which struggled and eventually dropped off the radar. As the band leader of Superzapper Recharge, he confused audiences for 2 years with the constantly changing roster and format, before the group settled on a trio in 2009 and started writing loosely structured material.
I stay up late to throw rocks at the early bird is the result of side recordings that didn't fit into his rock band. Most of the record demonstrates his tape-delay system, while others include Atari programming, simpler drones, and the Rain Mirror song “City Lights”. In a number of tracks he is backed by his former Superzapper Recharge bandmate Graham Roggli on drums.
Blake William plans to return to rock music by 2012 after several live performances promoting his new album.
