Cletus is the youngest of the seven Smailli family siblings. As long as he can remember he'd been playing guitar with his family's band, The Smaillis, with his ma and pa fronting the band and his twin sisters stepdancin'. When his sisters got to be marrying age, they both got hitched and, what with the babies on the way, it pretty much ended their stepdancin' careers. Cletus was keen to keep performing so he began beating the bushes (literally) for new band members. The first one he flushed out was his double-first cousin Elroy.
Elroy played the banjo and had developed a unique playing style due to his digital genetic defect (DGD). Consequentially, that same physical feature was the inspiration for the new band's name, "The Six-fingered Stringband".
The next to join was Repete. His real name is Peter Smailli Jr. ( no relation) but his dad started calling him Repete when he was justa little squirt and the name stuck.
Edison (Elroy's twin brother) and Chester joined The Six-fingered Stringband when their polka band "The Dikehoppers" disbanded due to creative and artistic differences. The boys themselves are each other's cousins but Chester is practically unrelated to the Smailli clan ( at least second cousins). Edison had always played upright bass but unfortunately lost his instrument as part of The Dikehoppers settlement agreement. As a result he was forced to make the switch to electric bass guitar. The real bonus is that his new instrument will actually fit inside the Econoline which makes Chester happy both for the visual impact and the increased aerodynamic performance.
Little Jimi was the last piece of the puzzle to be fit in. He's cousin Beddie's boy who was born during the time she spent down in the Boston States. They both returned home to Maple Plains when Jimi was just a baby but he has managed to retain his Boston accent to this day. That's the main reason Cletus won't let him sing. It was actually Jimi's idea to make a record covering Bee Gees songs. The rest of the band having never been away from home or exposed to the outside world didn't have a clue who or what a Bee Gee was.
So that's how the Six-fingered Stringband came to be and the rest, as they say, is history.
