Van der Veer used to be the guitarist in Adept (and continues to be the frontman of Bonne Aparte) but opts for a more personal approach with Herrek. Van der Scheer, who grew up in Papua, Indonesia, named the band after the way the Papuans pronounced his first name, Gerrit.
Lyrically, Herrek's début album, Waktu Dulu, zooms in on Van der Scheer's years in Indonesia. Partly inspired by the contemporary Brooklyn-scene, but most of all doing their own thing, it is full of atmospheric, dark folk with haunting vocals and keys.
The album was finally released in February 2013, long overdue. An album was announced as early as 2010, but it did not drop. It now turns out that Van der Scheer lost an album when his computer crashed, then recorded new material which he threw away. Those recordings were essentially solo recordings; in 2013 Herrek re-surfaced as a fully-fledged band.
In September 2010 Herrek did contribute two versions of one song (a daytime and a nighttime version) to the first installment of the 'De Speech' project. The eight-song CD also featured songs by LPG, Alamo Race Track and At the Close of Every Day. A second Herrek record, the A M EP, came out in December 2013.
