The founder of several legendary Colombian bands, he is widely regarded as a pioneer of the genre in Latin America.
As an original member of The Speakers, he recorded several singles, EP's and 5 full-length albums, including the masterpiece of Latin American psychedelia En El Maravilloso Mundo de Ingesón (1968), which was one of the first records to be independently released in Colombia.
After The Speakers split in 1969, he co-founded Siglo Cero with Jaime Rodriguez, Mario Renee, Ferdie Fernández and Roberto Fiorilli. Siglo Cero was a progressive rock outfit with major jazz influences. In 1970 they released Festival de la Vida, which was performed and recorded live on the 27th of June of that same year in Bogotá's Parque Nacional, before an unprecedented 10,000 people.
In 1972 Monroy debuted with his new project Génesis. With him, Edgar Restrepo in percussion and Federico Taborda. The band was also known as Genesis de Colombia and released 7 albums.
In the 80's, and intending to reach the Europan market Génesis was renamed Maíz. The band toured Europe for a period of three months in which they performed live in more than 100 concerts, and did over a dozen live TV shows.
