Jim decided to become a musician to "get girls", then discovered that he had a real talent for it. He picked up the guitar in his early teens, and received one of his first acoustic guitars in 1985. In his early career, Jim was greatly influenced by Bruce Springsteen because he was able to relate to the songs of working class struggles and lost love. Jim had also been writing poetry since his early teens, being influenced by Bob Dylan, and set his poetry to music.
When he was in his early and mid-20's, Jim's early performances were for family and friends, at backyard picnics and barbecues. However, he now enjoys a local following, performing at fairs and clubs in the New Hampshire area.
Jim moved to rural Southwestern New Hampshire in the mid-1990's, where he continued to pursue his dream of becoming a serious musician, while balancing life as a family man with a wife and young son, and working full time to make ends meet.
Jim finally realized his dream of recording and producing his first solo CD of original music, "The Beautiful One", in 2004. Jim's vocal styling has been compared to that of David Gray, however, he has an exceptional sound, all his own. His second CD ‘Untraditional’ combined original somgs, plus a few selcted traditonal covers. All of the songs on both CD’s were recorded at Jim's Chapman Pond Studio, in Sullivan, NH.
Something happened along the way to being the next Springsteen. Jim got tired of playing in bars for little or no money, no attention and competing with the jukebox and decided that he needed to pursue a different musical direction. Jim had always loved electronic music, although growing up it took a back seat to rock and folk music. In the mid 90's Jim picked up his first DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) Sonic Foundry's Acid 2.0. It was basically a loop driven piece of software, but it was a start to something bigger and better. It took many years for Jim figure out his next musical direction. After reading about Robert Fripp on Steve Vai's website ( Fripp was the opening act for one of the G3 tours way back) Jim picked up one of his "soundscape"'cd's and he was hooked. He searched on the internet for people who had played with Robert Fripp and came across Steve Roach. The first CD he picked up from Steve Roach was 'Mystic Chords and Scared Spaces' and as they say the lightbulb went off, and Jim had found his direction. Having been a self taught guitar player, Jim took the same route with keyboards. Luckily there were books and magazines (Future Music and Computer Music) filled with enough free software and tutorials, that he was on his way.
Many years later and lots of crappy music behind him, Jim is the proud creator and producer of the 'Dark Ambient Podcast' which is hosted at Mevio.com and is easily available through ITunes and many other podcasts sites. It is one of the few Ambient/Electronic podcasts that focuses only on self made original music. Jim has also started his own record label 'Earth Ambient Records' which has released 5 full length downloads/CD's available at Amazon.com, E-Music and I-Tunes. Between trying to release two CD's a and 8-9 podcasts a year, Jim is busier now than ever before. The podcast has crossed the 100,000 download mark. This is a far cry from when the podcast was first created and in the first month it was downloaded only 6 times!!! Besides the podcast, Jim has six ambient recordings avialable through various online retailers.
When Jim is not creating music, he enjoys watching his beloved Red Sox and Patriots, playing with his dogs and spending time with his wife and teenage son.
