In June 2008 demos of their tracks, “Mourning Star”, “Warhorse” and an Acoustic version of “22” were added to the playlist on the BBC Asian Network’s Friction show, which lead them to being featured as Friction’s artist of the week as well as being interviewed by Bobby Friction himself.

In 2006 after many gigs, including tours with bands such as “Fear Factory” and
“Breed 77” guitarist Jay Matharu had thought about the concept of fusing elements of Indian classical music with Rock music.
Influenced by grunge and the alternative rock movement of the nineties, Jay began playing guitar and composing songs at age thirteen. In his childhood he was subjected to Indian classical music by way of his mother’s Indian restaurant, though he never took up any Indian instrument he always showed an interest. He spent most of his teens performing with various rock and blues bands including Ireland’s “Bleedin’ Blues Band”
In the summer of 2007 Jay placed ads looking for instrumentalists to play with. The first musician to be incorporated was Raj Heer on bass. Raj came from a family of musicians and shared a similar vision. After a few months and twenty auditions later vocalist and lyricist Ed Parker was recruited.
Ed had grown up with influences such as Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell. He had previously played with various funk and rock bands including “Yellow Food Fobia” who had been featured on Xpress Radio. Not only was Ed experienced at fronting bands he was a regular on the singer/ songwriter circuit in London and Cardiff. Whilst the search continued for a drummer an old friend of Jay’s, Mark Weatherly (String Theory, Blind), stepped in to help get the band up and running. This was the original formation of Mahavira.
At the end of December 2007 drummer Mark Weatherly left the band to pursue other interests. The band had to adapt whilst searching for a new drummer, so rearranged all their material into an acoustic format and continued to perform without a drummer.
In June 2008 Sam White joined the band on drums. Sam and Jay had met whilst studying music at Thames Valley University in 2002. At the time Sam was playing “Unbroken 71” Though they never played together until they both joined shock metal band “Maleficent” in 2005, they became very good friends and would talk endlessly about music. Sam was contacted a few weeks after Mark had left, but was playing with two other bands, Steel Jaw and Dog at the time.
In December 2008 bassist Raj left the band leaving his legacy, as it was he who had named the band, ”Mahavira” – “Great Hero”.
Faced with a challenge of finding a new bassist, Mahavira placed ads and held many auditions before Zoltan Toth of Hungarian prog-rockers “Watchful Eye” joined the band in February 2009. Influenced by Mick Kahn and David Torn Zoltan had toured extensively throughout Hungary playing venues such as the Fészek Klub before graduating from the MZTSZ in Hungary. Not content with traditional Bass guitar Zoltan plays Fretless Bass exclusively.
Mahavira is currently working on new material for their next E.P. and are booked for many shows across the UK this year.
