Based in Brighton, the band is led by 21-year-old Mike Rosenberg, whose lyrical depth and extraordinarily emotive delivery are matched by the bands bittersweet close harmonies and cinematic multi-layered production.
At the heart of the band is the creative partnership between Mike (lead vocals / guitar) and Andrew Phillips (guitar / vocals / mandolin), who has previously worked with slovo and One Giant Leap, as well as composing for film and television.
The pair met in 2002 when they performed on the same bill at the Royal Court Theatre in London, sandwiched between Faithless and Horace Andy. Quickly discovering a mutual love of not only classic folk and country but also hip hop and electronica, they began writing together, drawing as much from the samples and beats of Blockhead as from the lyricism of Paul Simon or Neil Young.
The band line-up is completed by Alon Cohen (drums / vocals / samples) and Marcus ODair (electric and upright bass / glockenspiel), a rhythm section providing power, subtlety and versatility.
Mikes hugely charismatic live performances, marked out by his unique lyrics and vocal delivery, are lit up by a band playing everything from mandolins to samplers. And at the heart of it all is a collection of powerful, original and (whisper it) beautiful songs.
2005 has been a great year for the band: as well as numerous sell-out shows in Brighton, an appearance at Glastonbury, and regular London gigs supporting the likes of The Two Gallants and Malcolm Middleton, the band appeared at In The City in Manchester and is supporting Damien Dempsey for the climactic last two dates of his Irish tour this Christmas.
With an album scheduled for release in the first half of next year, 2006 is shaping up to be very busy indeed.
