Though they found limited success during their initial run, the New York Dolls prefigured much of what was to come in the punk rock era, particularly among other NYC bands such as the Ramones. And, even later; the Dolls' over-the-top crossdressing and sexual tone influenced the look of many glam metal groups, especially that of early Mötley Crüe and Poison, and their shambling and sloppy but highly energetic playing style set the tone for many later rock n roll bands.
Their self-titled album was an underground sensation, particularly with smooth 70s easy listening ruling the airwaves back then. Chrissie Hynde once commented that every punk band ("And I knew them all") had both New York Dolls albums, illustrating the Dolls' influence. Still, the original line-up experienced many problems, particularly with the mainstream record industry that didn't know what to do with the wild group. Upon their break-up, frontman David Johansen had a moderately successful solo career.
In 2004, the three surviving members reunited for some sporadic touring. In 2006, now down to two surviving members, the band released a new album, 'One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This'. Two albums followed after this: 'Cause I Sez So', in 2009, followed up by a revamped lineup for 2011's 'Dancing Backward in High Heels'.
Sylvain Sylvain died on January 13, 2021. He was 69 years old.

Personality Crisis
New York Dolls Lyrics
Well, we can't take it this week
And her friends don't want another speech
Hoping for a better day to hear what she's got to say
All about that
Personality crisis, you got it while it was hot
But now frustration and heartache is what you got
(That's why they talk about personality)
But now you're tryin' to be some no you got to do some
Want to be someone who cow, wow, wows
But you think about the times you did they took every ounce
When it sure got to be a shame when you start to scream and shout
You got to contradict all those times you were butterflyin' about
(You was butterflyin')
'Bout personality crisis, you got it while it was hot
You know it's hot, you know, it's
Frustration and heartache, what you got
I said I'm talking about personality, yeah, yeah, yeah
And you're a prima ballerina on a Spring afternoon
Change on into the wolfman, howlin' at the moon, hooowww
Got a personality crisis you got it while it was hot
You know it's hot, you know it's
Frustration and heartache is what you got
Now with all the crossin' fingers that mother nature says
Your mirrors get jammed up with all your friends
That personality everything starts to blend (not like moi)
Personality when your mind starts to blend
Got so much personality impression of a friend of a friend
Of a friend, of a friend, of a friend
Personality wonderin' how celebrities ever met
(Look and find out on television)
Personality crisis you got it while it was hot
You know it's hot, you know it's frustration and heartache is all you got
Oh, don't you worry
Personality crisis please don't cry
It's just a personality crisis, please don't stop
Because you walk a personality, talk a personality

Rolling Stones as barbaric transvestites = New York Dolls. Great song. These guys looked glam but musically were garage punk rock.
Buster Hymen
@Nocturnal Popsicle lol.....that's the spirit
Charles Jannuzi
Ironic to me that as a band that obviously owed a lot to the Stone, the Dolls then showed the Stones how to adapt to the 70.
Chester Winkle
