release from Patches and Gretchen, which is
Minneapolis musician/songwriter, Gretchen
Seichrist. This, her first release, coincided with
the release of Aimee Mann’s new album,
Smilers, which featured the song Medicine
Wheel, co-written by Gretchen and Aimee.
Local songwriter/musician Devin Hill,
describes her as “a cross between Patti Smith,
Velvet Underground, Big Star’s Sister Lovers,
and good old-fashioned Gestalt therapy!”
Devin recalls that Seichrist “had a wild,
unconventional approach to guitar playing and
singing, but very engaging. Then I saw her
lyrics and was extremely impressed. I ‘helped’
her with songwriting and playing. Turns out
she had tons of demos and had been writing
lyrics in relative isolation for years. She put
together a batch of demos and, Captain
Beefheart-style, went to Sparta Sound Studio
in northern Minnesota, and in 36 hours
recorded a 16-song album with Rich Mattson,
and other talented musicians that Rich had
rounded up.”
When she returned, she sent her album to
Chris Roberts, host of The Current radio
station, and within a month was playing live on
The Current’s Local Show with musicians John
Eller, and Dave Boquist. (Son Volt)
Seichrist is not naïve. She sings with a husky,
wise voice with the unguarded, private quality
of a girl with a hairbrush microphone in her
bedroom mirror. She admits she’s pretending
to be a rock star but knows her songs are offkilter.
She sounds like a cigar-smoking bulldog
singing quiet lullabies.
Her songs are clever, funny and
sophisticated—she isn’t just singing her
journal out loud. The lyrics are clear,
bold and totally unique.
Suggested tracks for radio play: Dumb in the Dark,
Warrior Way, Wanda
