The three have been in the greater Cleveland music scene for years. Todd and Joe were in a band called The Family Riot when the band disbanded. They found BeZo and started Something Involving A Monkey in early 2010. They began playing shows live in 2011.
Their music has a certain carnival element to it, that incorporates several different genres. A typical set can range from Grind-core to Swing, with sludgy stoner sounds and jazz parts. They tend to bring a touch of humor to their music, and they take their jokes very seriously.
They have released a debut Demo E.P. In the spring of 2011. It contained a fair representation of what the band is, with a heavier song like "Fukivino", a spacey song like "Diva Pizza", and a swing song like "Enis the Muppet Eating Puppet".
On December 30th, 2011, their drummer Todd Ankrom passed away shortly after playing a show at Peabody's in Cleveland, OH. The band was opening up for Mushroomhead for their Old School Christmas show, when Todd collapsed just hours after playing their set. It was believed to be a heart attack caused by a complication from a battle with Shingles. Todd was 33.
After an extended mourning period, the band put on a benefit show for his wife and family honoring his commitment to the local Cleveland music scene. They then announced they had found a new drummer, and man named Nick Ritz, that had worked with Joe in the past in a band called Happy Rainbow Death. The band is now picking up where they left off with Todd, and plans to finish what they started.
Something Involving A Monkey has played shows with Polkadot Cadaver, Downtown Brown, Ideamen, Mushroomhead, Stolen Babies, Screaming Mechanical Brain, El Creepo, Ventana, Circus of Dead Squirrels, and many others. Stay tuned as they head into the studio in the fall of 2012 to record their debut album, The Wasteland!
