Robin Storey, Andy Eardley and Mark Spybey.
Founding member of Zoviet-France, Robin Storey, has worked under the name Rapoon since leaving the band in 1992, releasing numerous cd's, touring, authoring best selling loop-sample cd's and collaborating widely. Andy Eardley worked with the band from 1990 to 1995 and was part of the Zoviet-France side project, Horizon 222, subsequently working under the name Delayer. Mark Spybey was a member of the band between 1987 and 1999. He subsequently worked under the names Dead Voices on Air, Propeller, collaborated widely, toured and was a member of Download (ex-Skinny Puppy). He was also a member of Sofortkontakt!, led by the late Michael Karoli of Can.
The impetus for the formation of The Reformed Faction came several years ago, when four of the ex-members met and planned to do some work together. This is not the equivalent of an underground eighties revival band. The three musicians involved feel drawn to create music that honours the process of spontaneous composition, favoured by Can. It was this process that Zoviet-France adopted. Using live improvisations, the trio then cut and paste, in the grand tradition of pioneers such as Holger Czukay of Can to create collage like compositions. Instead of the analogue four track tape machines of old, all of the music is recorded onto computers but the object brut like way of assembling pieces remains essentially as it was when Zoviet-France first started to record in 1981.
At the heart of the sound is the use of unconventional sound sources; children's musical toys, ethnic instruments, homemade gadgets and sound processors. Bagpipe chanters, flutes, percussive instruments and the effected tones of the human voice are all utilised. Over reliance on the detached and distant excesses of technology creates stagnant and purposeless music. This is visual music; made by the human hand, drawn by breath.
The members of "The Reformed Faction of Soviet France" helped to shape the sound and presence of the original band, which always marketed itself as an anonymous collective, indeed it later became a workers co-operative. When individual members left the band and forged new careers, they did not seek to advertise themselves as being ex-members but the fact remains that is exactly what they were or rather, are. To deny membership of the band and deny the influence that the ex-members had on the band is to re-write history. The members of the Reformed Faction between them have appeared on over 100 releases since they left Zoviet-France, have toured with a wide variety of celebrated musicians and to this day, continue to use exactly the same techniques in music making that they did when they were members of the band. The Reformed Faction is exactly what the name says but the music that they create is about the here and now.
